Damn! It's Hot Out!!!

I guess Mark Twain needs to rewrite his line The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco. It doesn't seem to apply anymore.
 
According to the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, last month was the third-hottest September on record globally, trailing September 2023 and September 2020. Many United States cities including Phoenix, Denver, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, Rapid City and West Palm Beach experienced record-high temperatures.
 
I had to sign up for it back in the 80's.
It freaked me out a bit at first, but being young, stupid, and often a bit liquored-up, I quickly forgot about it.

Like when I was a fighting age man, I was a dirty hippie who was totally opposed to the war machine and signing up.

But now that I'm old, I kind of wish I made different decisions.

So with age, I realized that I was a goddamn hypocrite in my younger years and I feel a bit guilty about it.

Also my generation has had it way too easy. There's a philosopher's poem about it and I am on the pussy side of that phrase:

"Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times.”

G K Chesterton said that and I think it holds true.

My dad was one of the strong man and I'm part of what comes after that.....
 
I signed up for selective service (the draft) and had the card that said I could be called to serve up till I was 25 or something.

Nothing to feel guilty about.
I signed up even though I didn't want to.
If I would have gotten drafted, I would have served even though I REALLY wouldn't have wanted to go.

It's another one of the reasons that I have a huge amount of respect for people that volunteer for service.

I have to renew my security clearance every 5 years or so (which is a whole other topic, as we have people just giving away our secrets), and one of the questions is my selective service number. At one point, I didn't know I had one, but I do. So when I turned 18, I was registered. But they didn't have a draft then, so it didn't matter.

No, fool.
It was the law that you had to sign up selective service when you turned 18.
That meant that if they ever went to war and needed to have a draft, they could pull your number from the pool of registered selective service candidates and you would have to report for military service.

Unlike people that volunteered for service, it was far from brave.
It was more about not wanting to get busted for not registering.
