I saw that DirecTV Stream price increase. I might not be remembering right, but it seems like they JUST did that already recently. If MLB would make my Royals games available on MLB.TV I'd be thinking REAL seriously about giving DirecTV the boot.

DirecTV typically raises prices at the start of the year. This price increase is odd indeed.

And we all know that won't happen.

The RSNs (and all channels, really) obviously want people watching their channels. More eyeballs on the games means more eyeballs on the commercials means bigger ratings means an easier time to negotiate team/channel renewals.

If people were watching in-market on a package designed for out-of-market fans, well...

It's the same reason why Howard Stern didn't stream his FM radio show over the internet.

Oh wait...the stuff I talked about 20 years ago turned out to be true.

They are using the writer and actor strikes as an excuse to fleece the public some more.

It's almost as if the "everyone needs paid more" crowd doesn't know what they're yakking about.

Don't they know where this money comes from?

It is definitely cheaper than cable, it seems the companies running these services are getting the same ideas as cable, where they start charging extra for sports channels (Fubo charges $14 more for my RSN). Youtube TV charges about that much for 4K, which stands to reason should be standard by this point since where almost approaching 8k being the thing in the not too distant future. The big hope for a while that Sunday Ticket's price would lower since it was bought out from DirecTV, but that's more Roger Ghadafi, er, Goodell's fault than anything else.

And what's in 4k anyway? Various stuff on the "plus apps" and that's about it...very minimal live TV and most of that is done via the channel apps (Fox Sports app) themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised if ALL live TV services eventually go kerplunk. People are gonna subscribe to Netflix as they see fit. They're gonna do a year of Peacock or Paramount+ or whatever as the promotions are there.

And we're all gonna have 10 different apps for various TV shows, different bills and it's gonna be a mess...but a la carte is always more expensive.

The next price increase to hit streaming: Amazon Prime is introducing ads to its shows and movies. Users can avoid them for an extra $2.99 a month.

People who are with Amazon don't mind supporting the "Evil Empire" so switch to Wal-Mart+ and get a year od Peacock for free.

But if you're with Amazon, cancel your music streaming app because you probably have an Apple Music or Spotify or such and are paying twice to stream music.

Except that the RSN my Royals airs on ( Bally Sports ) is thiiiiiiiiiiiis close to going tits up. They've already had to bail on some teams, & MLB has made them available. They're also bailing on certain NBA & NHL teams - & some of those games are ending up on over-the-air tee vee like it's 19friggin'77,

From what I've seen, one of two things has been happening:
1) MLB starts a new channel in those areas. This channel is available to any provider in the area, plus also available for $20/mo.

2) Scripps Networks has also been taking some teams and starting their own sports division.

On the surface, not much changes. Sure, the channel number and graphics change, but it's still the same RSN concept.

I've heard from one person that some teams (Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees) will be allowed to keep their channels, whereas the smaller-market teams will go on MLB.tv national basis. Some of these bigger channels like Marquee in Chicago will go national and allow Cubs fans all across the country to watch on the actual channel OR on MLB.tv.

Of course, this also comes from the same person who was on a phone chat with a Hulu CSR who insisted Hulu was getting Marquee on a national basis with no blackouts. (The phone caller could hear the typing in the background, thus assuming the info was on the CSR's screen.) Oh yeah, this phone call happened summer of 2022, if not prior... blaming COVID for why it hasn't yet happened.

That load of hogwash cannot be further from the truth.

That's odd. I pay $80/mo for internet, and $88/mo for YouTube TV including HBO/Max, for a total of $168/mo. My last cable TV service package (with internet) was $270/mo with a discount; I believe it's regularly $300/mo. That's a difference of $132/mo, or $1,584/year. So the only problem I have with their claim is that it's too conservative.

DirecTV paying twice? That's what we customers are doing!
Diamond's been trying all kinds of stupid ideas lately, like going to teams & saying "how about we give you less money?" Obviously most teams have responded with "how about you go screw?". It's like Diamond doesn't realize they have ZERO leverage in their current scenario.

I literally just came across this, too : MLB Asks Bankruptcy Judge to Deny Deadline Extension Request from Diamond Sports Group

Now this thread's got me looking at Hulu Live. Here's a pretty intriguing option:

Hulu Live
Plus
The Disney Bundle
Hulu Plus - Ad-Free
Disney+ - Ad-Free
ESPN+
$89.99 a month.

Maybe add Max for another $16.

I'll still have Apple TV+ (although at this point I should probably look at Apple One or something) and I'll have MLB.TV for next year's Red Sox season. This might work.

I quit Amazon prime in August. Too much for what they offer.

I just renewed mine yesterday. To me it's still well worth it for TNF, The Boys, shipping and random other TV and movies I watch throughout the year.

Pam got YouTube TV last week with Sunday Ticket (I'll make a thread about how awesome that is in the NFL forum) and lets me mooch off her account. It's pretty cool. Besides football all I've really used it for so far is hockey on TBS and ESPN but I can see myself using it a lot as time goes on.

They're not wrong though. If there's less content than what they originally agreed to air...well, it depends what the contract says.

If I'm in Diamond's shoes, I'd probably want to renegotiate payment.

If you can stand ads, when you get Hulu's Live TV package it includes Disney + & ESPN + at no extra charge.

Not sure I could put up with the ads. Plus at that price (minus Max) it's not much higher than the YTV base package, and I can get Max (and possibly Red Zone?) still less than cable.
