Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

Boy Meets Girl
#5 "Waiting for a Star to Fall"
#39 "Oh Girl"

Subjectively a OHW in my book.
Fun fact, the same duo that sang #5 also wrote Whitney Houston's 'I wanna dance with somebody', Which also was a pretty big hit. As well as a few others off the top of my head I don't remember.

I remember hearing #5 all the time when it came out. Not that I listened to a ton of pop radio. But that song was everywhere.

As a teen, Jacks was in a band called The Chessmen. After the band broke up, he formed The Poppy Family with wife Susan. Their 1969 song "Which Way You Goin' Billy?" hit #2 on the American charts.

Poppy Family
#2 "Which Way You Goin' Billy?"
#29 "That's Where I Went Wrong"

I'm pretty sure I went 18,911 days without hearing either song. Today, on my 18,912th day, I listened to clips of both and didn't recognize either one.

However.... when I saw a list of the most-played songs on radio and television of the 20th century and #2 was "Never My Love" by The Association, I listened to it and didn't recognize it. So, I may not be the best judge of whether or not these guys are subjectively a zero hit wonder.

They have several hits in Canada.

Terry Jacks is more of a OHW but still had other minor hits here.

Poppy Family: 6 top 40s in Canada! They're Canadian so that makes sense they'd likely have a better run in their homeland.

Terry Jacks: 7 top 40 hits in Canada! (1 in the US)

And of all those hits, I only know "Seasons".

For Terry, I also only know "Seasons".

Phillip Phillips
#6 "Home"
#24 "Gone Gone Gone"

Definitely know #6. Didn't know #24. Subjectively a OHW in my opinion.

PS That's a cruel joke to have the last name Phillips and name your kid Phillip. In junior high, a friend of mine's brother was named William Will. I used to say stuff like "The question everyone's asking... Will Will Will's will hold up in court?"

Wow, I assumed his 1st name was a nickname, but no. In fact, his father is Phillip Phillips Sr. That's just stupid.

As far as his music, it's the epitome of soulless, generic soccer mom dreck.

I'll admit I like "Home". But also can't disagree with the above statement about it. It's formulaic modern pop, trying to photocopy elements of the success of Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons, Lumineers, American Authors, Mumford & Sons, etc

Does he live in Phillipdelphia?

Hinder
#3 "Lips Of An Angel"
#31 "Better Than Me"

Don't know the second hit. Subjectively a OHW?

BTW I think this makes 128 two-hitters. The option for different madnesses is available. Like "who has the most-known one-hit and least-known second hit" or "who is the biggest/best-known artist to have only two entries in the top 40" or "the artist with two most forgotten top 40s", etc.

Yesterday was OHW Wednesday on my local FM station. Yesterday's questionable entries:
  • "Beds Are Burning" - Midnight Oil
  • "Two Princes" - The Spin Doctors
These are the only songs of these artists they currently play but really.

Spin Doctors
#7 "Two Princes"
#17 "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong"
#42 "You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast"

I say no way they're considered a OHW subjectively. Both top 40s are still well known.
Evidently that radio station disagrees with me.

As for the other one...

Midnight Oil
#17 "Beds Are Burning"
#47 "Blue Sky Mine"
#53 "The Dead Heart"

Technically they are a one-hit wonder, but subjectively they are NOT to me. However, if I played these three songs for the other band members, I'm pretty sure they'd only know "Beds".

You are missing a whole bunch. And way more were hits in Canada (the source of this radio station) than in the US.

Not a OHW in any stretch of the imagination.

And I thought "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" was a bigger hit than "Two Princes". When that album came out, Can't Be Wrong was played a lot more than Princes.

You are missing a whole bunch.
I don't think I am. Are you looking under the Hot 100 column? On rock stations (mainstream and alt) they have several hits, but in the pop world it's just one top 40.
And I thought "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" was a bigger hit
Where I was at the time, "Princes" outdid "Little Miss". I think I told this story elsewhere on here years ago, but someone came up to me and said something like "You're always hip to the new music. I got one for ya. Have you heard of Spin Doctors?" And I said something like "Well, Little Miss, Jimmy Olsen's Blues and Two Princes are all over the radio right now. So.... yeah." He thought he was mentioning some band that was about to break. They'd already had three songs on the radio for months, but he didn't get into them until "Two Princes" was in the top 10.

Oops. I was looking at the main. But several hits in Canada so I stand by the not OHW statement.

I looked at Canadian chart numbers and "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" peaked at #57 here nationally. I think it was likely a regional hit. Hip alternative music was really big in Toronto at that time and this qualified and was still mainsteam to avoid going too far off the beaten path. I just know that song was everywhere for a couple months long before "Two Princes" became a hit.

Neon Trees
#6 "Everybody Talks"
#13 "Animal"

"♫ It started with a whisperrrr..." Actually, it started with a bang and is ending with a whisper. Their two top 40s are from their first two albums. "Animal" is 2010, "Everybody Talks" is 2011.

But I think both songs are still well-known, at the very least to the 30 and under crowd. They have other songs that I like: "Sleeping With A Friend", "Songs I Can't Listen To" and "Used To Like".

David Geddes
#4 "Run Joey Run"
#18 "The Last Game Of The Season"

The second song was just on this week's 70s countdown on Thursday. I don't know either one.
