Adventures In Koopland

Teaching sucks. The pay is crap and the bureaucracy is stifling.

Also, would you want your kids in a room with Koop all day?

Well, all teachers at least up here need to have clean criminal background checks so little chance if regs down there the same.

I started in education, and switched to architecture later on. I didn't have an associates though. If you've got your associates, this is the perfect time to switch to something else if there's something you're interested in.

Business degrees are easy to follow up with after earning an associates. You can do a lot of different things with one of those. Having an education background could be useful in a corporate environment.

From this list (and what I remember about Koop's record), it looks like Florida would issue Koop a teaching certificate. That doesn't mean a school would hire him.

Quick update. Nothing major to report yet. I have now been out of work for 6 days and I've applied at 5 places. One of those places turned out to be a Craigslist scam so really only 4 legit applications have been submitted. I had an interview on Saturday for a gig that sounded interesting. It was a cube monkey customer service job but the company I'd be working for was a school and it sounded interesting. I found that one in the paper. It said, "On the spot hiring is subject to background checks". I'm not too hopeful about getting it. I was honest about my record and the interview did seem to go well but I wasn't hired on the spot. They said that I should expect to hear something by tomorrow or Wednesday but they way the person said it didn't feel right. I guess if Thursday rolls around and they don't contact me it's not going to happen. I'd like to get that because it seems like somewhat interesting work that, while still much less than what I was making it's a livable wage. I also have the Amazon interview on Thursday. That is only part time and really it's not something I want to do but I can't be picky right now.

I took my dad out to our weekly nature park walk today and told him about the whole deal. He was very supportive and everything went well. I know if things got real bad I could go to him but I'm way too old to be doing that. It's super embarrassing and like I said I don't even really have to think about that for many months. It's just these shitty scenarios keep popping into my head.

Tonight and for the next few days I have very important plans; I'm going to replay Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That is a solid 100+ hour time suck and a very productive way to spend my unemployed time. I'm joking there but really I may as well have some fun with my extended time off. Of course I'm still going to be on the job hunt everyday. I think so far I'm being proactive enough to not feel too guilty about wasting away some hours playing a game.

You're not that much older than this guy.

A couple of months ago, the Mrs. and I were out doing errands, and sat-down for salads at a Wendy's in Portsmouth NH. At the table across from us was a group of beggars - the ones who stand at the exit to shopping centers with their cardboard "homeless" signs - but this was like a union meeting.

There was an older guy who was clearly in-charge, and three younger people. He was telling them strategies for the best places to stand, and how to act, etc. It was really weird; they all had cell phones, were eating full meals, and seemed to be doing much better than they'd want you to believe.

We always get annoyed when we see these people standing out there for hours, just asking for money. Because they could be mowing someone's lawn, or doing cleanup or repairs around a house, or a thousand other things that would be more constructive and profitable.

That story is a fun 'look at the freak' type distraction but then I read he has a kid and it got sad. I'm going off memory of skimming an article here but it said something like he only had to pay only $60 a month in child support and couldn't even come up with that.

His arrogant attitude is what made him such an easy villain. He was not even willing to help out around the house? How hard is it to wash a few dishes or vacuum a carpet? And his parents were willing to give him money to help him find a place. It's amazing how awful he is.

this was like a union meeting.

Ha!

I got to know some of the panhandlers who worked Guadalupe St when I was at UT. They had houses and cars. They looked at all of their options and panhandling was the wise choice. Set your own hours, get high/drunk whenever you want (and you pretty much always want), be your own boss. I'm not annoyed by them - I just never fund them. If everyone stopped they would do something else.

I GOT A JOB!!!

That cube monkey position I said last night I didn't think I'd get, I got! They just called and set everything up. My training starts on the 18th. It lasts 2 weeks and is paid and then I begin the actual job, doing customer service for that online school. I am very happy! While I'm pretty sure it won't be as laid back as my last gig and I know for a fact that it doesn't pay as well, I'm just delighted that I was able to land something new only 1 week after getting the boot. Like I said last night, it is full time and a livable wage so I can't really complain.

Today is a good day. Now I have 2 weeks to do absolutely nothing. I still plan to go to the Amazon thing on Thursday cause why not? I know it's part time and less money but I may as well see what they offer when I'm there in person. Besides that I will more or less have a 2 week vacation now.
