Us3 took their name from Us Three, a 1960 Blue Note Records album by bop pianist Horace Parlan, who wrote the title track. The album was produced by Alfred Lion, who had co-founded the Blue Note label in 1939. Cantaloop features a sample of Cantaloupe Island, which Herbie Hancock wrote and recorded in 1964 for his Blue Note album Empyrean Isles. (In ancient cosmology, the Empyrean was the highest part of heaven.) Hancock recorded a new version of Cantaloupe Island in 1976. Here is his original:

Boyz II Men - man did those guys over-sing, way too much.
This seems like it was the start of the whole era of over-singing, which sadly we're still in. Maybe since all the wheedly-deedly guitar players had been extinguished at this point, people needed something over-the-top in their radio music.

But yeah - the "check this out" style of singing is one of the big reasons I stopped paying attention to popular music by this point.

BEST I RECOGNIZE
16 19 Martin Page - In the House of Stone and Light

WORST I RECOGNIZE
28 28 Rednex - Cotton Eye Joe
24 25 Hootie & The Blowfish - Let Her Cry
21 18 Des’ree - You Gotta Be
12 22 Bryan Adams - Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman?
All four songs are atrociously bad. Like "shoot me in the head so I don't have to hear them" bad.

16 19 Martin Page - In the House of Stone and Light

One of those great songs that is sadly a very forgotten hit. I rarely hear it, and only on 90s-themed stations.

10 -- Boyz II Men - Water Runs Dry

One of only two B2M songs I liked enough back in the day to actually go out of my way to hear it once in a while. The other is "Motownphilly".

08 10 Blessid Union of Souls - I Believe

The rare pop song (not rap) with the N word featured prominently in it. I think radio edited it out back in the day? Nowadays every black rapper has to say it at least 15 times a song or they become an outcast.

Wow I remember thinking at the time that this was a good song, and I probably haven’t listened to it since then.

I know they used "brother" in the radio edit. It was muted for television.

One of the first songs with the so-called "N-word" is Run, Nigger, Run! Published in 1851, the song is about a runaway black slave seeking to avoid capture. It was first recorded by Fiddlin' John Carson on August 27, 1924. The song has been recorded by more than 20 other artists including Uncle Dave Macon in May 1925 and Dr. Humphrey Bate & His Possum Hunters in March 1929. Many of the versions replace "Nigger" with "Johnny," "Slave," "Smoke" or "Boy." Here is a version by Gid Tanner & His Skillet Lickers, recorded on March 29, 1927:
