80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

1981/12/12

38: WRACK MY BRAIN – RINGO STARR

Not sure if I'd ever heard this one before. Weird, as the guy was a friggin' Beatle, fer Chrissakes.

33: POOR MAN’S SON - SURVIVOR

Ditto on this one, & man is it generic.
27: SOMEONE COULD LOSE A HEART TONIGHT – EDDIE RABBITT

He's one of those guys I've been reintroduced to listening to these old countdowns, & I'm always surprised how much I like those hits of his that I haven't heard in hell, decades. There has to be an old El' Cheapo "greatest hits" CD out there, right? ( heads to Amazon ) EDIT RABBITT? : There is. 5 bucks, with all the hits I wanted. Sold.

26: STEAL THE NIGHT – STEVIE WOODS

This week's "Haven't Heard This Since It Was A Hit" entry. Weird that we didn't play it on our AM station, cuz it would've totally fit.

22: MY GIRL (GONE, GONE, GONE) - CHILLIWACK

A real favorite of mine - I still have the 45. Another band I should look into about a "greatest hits" CD.

18: PRIVATE EYES – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES
13: I CAN’T GO FOR THAT – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

They were my first concert ( "H2O" tour in...1982? ) so it's weird that all I've ever owned of theirs was a "best of" CD now, & "Voices" on cassette & "Along The Red Ledge" on vinyl back in the day. BUT...I recently decided to take the deep dive, & ordered a couple of those "Original Album Classics" CD box sets of their stuff that has 5 albums per box set. The first one just arrived yesterday, actually.

Man, I liked a LOT of the music in this countdown. Only a handful I didn't care for, or have some affection towards.

21: COOL NIGHT – PAUL DAVIS
20: OUR LIPS ARE SEALED – THE GO-GO’S

My wife groaned at both of these. Not because she dislikes them, but they get stuck in her head for hours.

7: HERE I AM – AIR SUPPLY

18: PRIVATE EYES – DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES
3: EVERY LITTLE THING SHE DOES IS MAGIC – THE POLICE
2: WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU - FOREIGNER
1: PHYSICAL – OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN

So... all three of us immediately knew the #1 and #2 song this week, we knew them the second they announced the previous week it was gonna be 1981. Biggest song of the decade, and the longest-running #2 of the decade! So, the competition became "guess the #3 song". My friend's old roommate nailed it. My friend's son and I both guessed "Private Eyes".

#79 Sheila "Little Darlin"

A chart-topping song in France. One of her TWENTY-SEVEN chart-toppers!
