80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

Good 20
Okay 1
Bad 19

Started off a little rough but got really good. #1983

28. TRULY - LIONEL RICHIE

My guess at #1. It peaked on Thanksgiving. I thought it was the chart-topper right after "Mickey", but it was the one right before. I shoulda gone with one of my other potential guesses, which were: 7. AFRICA - TOTO & 4. MANEATER - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES.

I think the ambition of the others to play this game is dying. Sunday afternoon and still no message about who picked what. Last night my friend's son told me he was still undecided between two continents ("Africa" and "Down Under"). Well, I'm still gonna play even if they stop. Because fun.

12. YOU AND I - EDDIE RABBITT WITH CRYSTAL GAYLE

#55 Wolf (Bill Wolfer) "Papa Was A Rolling Stone"

No entry for him on Wikipedia, but he's mentioned on the song page. One of these background singers' names sounds vaguely familiar:
Backing Vocals – Julia Waters, Maxine Waters, Michael Jackson, Oren Waters
Also, some guy named Stevie Wonder played harmonica on a different song on this guy's album.

#68 Who "Eminence Front"

WHAT?! And it PEAKED at #68?! What a sin!

#69 Spinners "Funny How Time Slips Away"

Their last Hot 100 entry (aside from being sampled/featured in a 1995 remake of their song "I'll Be Around")

#79 Hughes/Thrall "Beg, Borrow Or Steal"

Hughes (Deep Purple), Thrall (Pat Travers), Banali (Quiet Riot). Song's not bad!

Will never make the top 40

These are surprising. Rough Trade and Chilliwack are because of American's hatred of all things Canadian.

How can one song be 2 different positions on the same chart? Is this Schrodinger's chart?

20 out of 20. Surprising for an early 80's countdown, but way too much Air Supply and Barely Manenough for me.

I don't think I've ever heard any of these before, which is a high number of tunes considering I was almost 14 & well into my music/radio listening life at this point. The Commodores song wasn't familiar, either - but I know I owned that record back then, so I know I would've heard it even if it didn't stick.

33. VOICES - CHEAP TRICK

A gorgeous ballad from one of my all-time favorite bands. They used to do a version live where it was just Robin accompanied by Rick on electric guitar that I might've liked even more than the album version.

21. ROMEO'S TUNE - STEVE FORBERT

Really underrated tune that you don't hear much anymore. He was one of those "next Dylan/Springsteen" guys that just never really panned out. I still have a crappy radio promo 45 RPM record of this 'un.

18. WAIT FOR ME - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

I'm a sucker for so many of these H&O songs that I kinda consider "mid-period" for them. After the couple huge hits on the early-mid 70's, but right before they exploded again in the early-mid 80's.

16. YES, I'M READY - TERI DESARIO

Cheezy as hell, but I like cheez.

13. LADIES NIGHT - KOOL & THE GANG

Only time I ever saw them live was opening for Van Halen on the "Different Kind Of Truth" tour, & they had that arena hoppin'.

7. WE DON'T TALK ANYMORE - CLIFF RICHARD
5. CRUISIN' - SMOKEY ROBINSON

More delicious cheez. Or maybe cheezy corn.
3. COWARD OF THE COUNTY - KENNY ROGERS

I can't hear one of his songs without saying out loud "Kenny? KENNY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?" like Kramer from the Seinfeld episode about Kenny Rogers Roasters. Say what you want, the man made a mean bird.

2. DO THAT TO ME ONE MORE TIME - CAPTAIN AND TENNILLE

I'm always surprised that they were still having hits into the 80's.

I ended up hearing the last 30-ish minutes of the repeat of this one when I jumped on my bike this AM. A couple bonus thoughts ( I pass the savings on to you, the reader ) :

I hadn't heard "Coward Of The County" in, I dunno, 30 years? 35? And I'd forgotten how friggin' GRIM it gets. If you don't know why, listen closely when Kenny talks about what happens to Becky. Yikes.

Also - I understand SiriusXM's whole deal with "80's On 8" is that they have the original VJ's a hosts. But how much longer to I have to hear Nina Blackwood on the air? She sounds like she's 3 breaths away from an iron lung. Jee-ZUS. Just brutal.

It's been about 9 months since a crackle/static appeared in Marc Goodman's mike. You would think they would have corrected that by now. Maybe they are filtering power from his mike to work Nina's Iron Lung?

Once again a VJ gets facts wrong. Marc said this was "Rock With You"'s first week at #1. It was it's second week. A relatively minor glitch for them.

Good 5
Okay 10
Bad 25

Me halfway through: This countdown is gonna put me in a coma.
My son: Yep.
My wife: That's why I'm down here [where the music isn't playing].

17. DEJA VU - DIONNE WARWICK

1. ROCK WITH YOU - MICHAEL JACKSON

I guessed this one yay! The other two either both voted for "Escape" or one voted "Escape" and the other this one.

Random bit of info: last week I didn't pick the #28 song, I picked the #4. I chose "Maneater", but forgot that's the one I chose, mistakenly thinking I picked "Truly". My friend corrected me.

#92 Breathless "Takin' It Back"

No wiki page, just a mention under Jonah Koslen.

Jonah Koslen is an American singer-songwriter and musician best known for his work with the Michael Stanley Band and Breathless in the 1970s and 1980s.

#93 Flying Lizards "Money"

This rivals Devo's "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" for being intentionally odd. Early industrial? It's a cover of "Money (That's What I Want)".

Won't ever reach the top 40
#41 Suzi Quatro "She's In Love With You"
#43 Joyce Cobb "Dig The Gold"
#47 Dann Rogers "Looks Like Love Again"
#51 Inmates "Dirty Water"

#54 Robert Palmer "Can We Still Be Friends"
#55 Pleasure "Glide"
#60 Leif Garrett "Memorize Your Number"
#61 Molly Hatchet "Flirtin' With Disaster"
#62 Gamma "I'm Alive"
#66 Jimmy Buffett "Volcano"
#67 Jennifer Warnes "Don't Make Me Over"
#70 Journey "Too Late"
#71 Aerosmith "Remember (Walking in The Sand)"
#73 Tavares "Bad Times"
#74 Mike Pinera "Goodnight My Love"
#75 Lobo "Holdin' On For Dear Love"
#76 Sister Sledge "Got To Love Somebody"
#81 George Burns "I Wish I Was Eighteen Again"
#83 Switch "I Call Your Name"
#85 Peter Brown "Stargazer"
#86 Patrice Rushen "Haven't You Heard"
#87 Dollar "Shooting Star"
