80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

I've noticed the last several times I have listened there are lots of issues with the PAD data on the countdowns. Lots of songs just say #11 for example.

12: MY PREROGATIVE – BOBBY BROWN

My guess at #1. I was two weeks off. Alan said it peaked at #2, but it did reach #1.

10: ALL THIS TIME - TIFFANY

6: STRAIGHT UP – PAULA ABDUL

My friend's son guessed this one. Two weeks off (in the other direction). The order goes Bobby, Phil, Sheriff, Paula. I thought it went Bobby (Jan), Paula (Feb).

Won't ever make the top 40
#90 Alphaville "Forever Young"
#94 Al B Sure "Killing Me Softly"
#100 Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care"
This week's surprises. I hate the Killing Me Softly c-rap mix but I heard it a lot on radio in the day. Assumed it did better.
Traveling Wilburys is a travesty.

7 for me. Late 80's wasn't a great time for my musical tastes. There was a bit of a lull between the early 80's stuff and Grunge. A lot of stuff on this countdown I avoided like the plague back in the day. (New Kids, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson, etc.)

#48 Fleetwood Mac "As Long As You Follow"
#90 Alphaville "Forever Young"

Two slight surprises about not making the Top 40 since I remember them being all over the radio back in the day.

#100 Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care"

Now THIS is an outrage!

Were you thinking about the Fugees version? That one was pretty popular. The Al B. Sure version wasn't very good either. It peaked at number #80. I'm surprised it made the 100 at all.

39: KISS – THE ART OF NOISE FEATURING TOM JONES

I always forget Art Of Noise was involved with this, & that it's not just a Tom Jones solo thing.

34: IN YOUR ROOM – THE BANGLES

Back in my radio days, it was an on-air running joke that I was The Fifth Bangle.
29: THE LIVING YEARS – MIKE & THE MECHANICS

Sweet Jeezus, how I hate this song.
28: SHAKE FOR THE SHEIK – THE ESCAPE CLUB

Sweet Jeezus, how I hate this band.

26: SURRENDER TO ME – ANN WILSON & ROBIN ZANDER

I'm as big a Cheap Trick fan as you'll find, & I couldn't hum this if you held a gun to my head. Also - why would that ever happen?
24: DIAL MY HEART – THE BOYS

I don't think I'd ever heard this, but upon double checking I didn't hate it. Boy, that New Jack rhythm track got worn out in this era.

2: WHEN I’M WITH YOU - SHERIFF

I always find these "song gets reissued & becomes a massive hit outta nowhere" stories fascinating. So much so that I just read the Sheriff & Alias wiki pages.

Overall, that's a really solid, enjoyable countdown for a late 80's entry.

Back in my radio days, it was an on-air running joke that I was The Fifth Bangle.

I get the Beatles reference, but what's the story behind this?

Sweet Jeezus, how I hate this song.

Wow, first time I've ever heard a bad review of this song (I think?)

Boy, that New Jack rhythm track got worn out in this era.

That's for sure!

This is what I learned about this song a while ago.

...in 1988, a company that owned a bunch of radio stations decided to play some older, forgotten minor hits from bands like Sherriff, Benny Mardones and Synch - BAM! Their old songs all re-charted -- but much much higher than previously. Sheriff's song originally peaked at #61, but then re-peaked at #1! Very interesting story!

Here's another version of the story:

Nationwide Communications (owner of several radio stations) began to add older songs from acts like UB40 (“Red Red Wine”), Benny Mardones (“Into The Night”), Sheriff (“When I’m With You) and Synch (“Where Are You Now?”) into rotation, sending their past minor hits back onto the charts.

It was a Stern replay today (don't know the original air date) but he was saying he'd heard Sirius-XM-Pandora was considering buying out iHeartRadio. If they do, will we get Martha Quinn back on the VJ 40? ...he said with a glimmer of hope in his eyes.

On I Want To Know What Love Is, Foreigner is backed by Jennifer Holliday and the New Jersey Mass Choir. The ballad became Foreigner's first (and only) number-one hit. Mick Jones, who wrote the song, told Billboard columnist Paul Grein, "I was afraid people might think we'd gone soft or something. I certainly want to retain the rock image. We just put this out because the song was so strong and because it was coming out at Christmas and it had the right kind of mood." Lou Gramm admitted, "We worried the song might do irreparable damage to our rock image." It didn't.
