#96 Isle Of Man "Am I Forgiven"
#97 Barry Manilow "I'm Your Man"
#98 SOS Band "The Finest"

Here's two more cents: :-)

#45 Mary Jane Girls "Walk Like A Man"
This was a #41 peak!

#53 Chaka Khan "Love Of A Lifetime"
This was this song's peak position. This seems accurate.

#84 Gwen Guthrie "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent"
This was huge, played quite a bit (#1 Dance, #1 R&B, #5UK), and was a #42 peak.

#87 Level 42 "Hot Water"
I didn't realize this was released as a single. It appeared on the World Machine album (that contained "Something about you") for the US, but was actually released overseas in 1984.

#90 Doctor And The Medics "Spirit In The Sky"
This was a UK #1. I agree that this should have charted much higher.

#98 SOS Band "The Finest"
I could have seen this in the lower reaches of the 40 (was a #44 peak). It made a bigger splash on other charts (#2 R&B, #8 Dance, #17 UK).

#84 Gwen Guthrie "Ain't Nothin' Goin' On But The Rent"

All I can ever think of when I hear this one is Eddie Murphy.

"Hey baby, what's goin' on?"

"The rent, mother @%?&er."

39. AND I'M TELLING YOU I'M NOT GOING - JENNIFER HOLIDAY

Testi-freakin-fy, girl! What a voice! Haven't heard this since last year but it gets me every time. Who, in the last 10 years, has made the top 40 and can sing like this? Nobody, I bet!

@sadchild
I meant to post this last week, but here goes.

And I'm Telling You (Peak #22, R&B #1, UK # 32) is from the play Dreamgirls. I found a rare clip from the Tony Awards and it was one of the most powerful performances I've seen in a long time. The song start around 3:30.

Jennifer had some success on the R&B and Dance chart, but never had the type of recognition that I think she deserved. I agree. I can't think of too many artist can match that delivery.

Could be the first time the entire countdown is given the Beavis and Butthead treatment? I see like a half dozen songs I would listen to.

I guess I'm right in line here, because JEEZUS there's a lotta junk in that chart.

And there's more "I dunno what that is" songs that I would've guessed, as it's a mere couple years since I worked in the format.

Good 11
Okay 9
Bad 20

Better than the average 1988 countdown because GNR, Aerosmith, Def Lep, Joan Jett and Robert Palmer.

40. DON'T WORRY, BE HAPPY - BOBBY MCFERRIN

34. I KNOW YOU'RE OUT THERE SOMEWHERE - MOODY BLUES

I don't hear this one enough. Same with "Your Wildest Dreams".

1. ROLL WITH IT - STEVE WINWOOD

My guess at #1. I don't know the status of the other two people I compete against, but at least one of them picked "Dirty Diana" which just fell off the Hot 100 this week. Pretty fast drop for that one!! It peaked on 7/2 and was gone on 8/13.

#41 Paula Abdul "Knocked Out"
#42 Crowded House "Better Be Home Soon"
#43 Stevie B "Spring Love"

Wow this is a first! All three are on top 40's doorstep, and getting a big NOPE!

1. THE POWER OF LOVE - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

Cock Robin formed in 1982 in San Francisco. They've released seven studio albums, two live albums and five greatest-hits collections. They've had many hits in Europe but When You're Heart Is Weak was their only song to chart in the United States. On the August 31 chart it would reach #35 and drop out of the top 40 the following week.

On Valentine's Day 1987, KMET in Los Angeles dropped album rock and switched to "new age" music as KTWV, "The Wave." The last songs played on KMET were Mike + The Mechanics' The Living Years and the Traveling Wilburys' End Of The Line. The first song on the new KTWV was Sting's If You Love Somebody Set Them Free. If KTWV wanted to be rudely dismissive of all the KMET listeners, couldn't they have picked a song with better grammar?

AUGUST 24, 1985

Now, this week is almost literally right in the middle of my radio "career", since I was on-air from August '84 to Fall '86.

38. TAKE ON ME - A-HA

I still have a promo 45 single for this that has a little booklet attached to the cover, with pictures/drawings from the video. No idea if it's worth anything. I remember I used to have a running gag on the air about how a guy from this group was named Mags. For some reason, I thought that was funny.

36. WHEN YOUR HEART IS WEAK - COCK ROBIN

Good Lord, how I loved this song then & still do now. One I figured would be a BIG hit, but was completely wrong. Usually I had a better ear than that.

35. CRY - GODLEY & CREME

This one falls into the "how low can I turn down the monitor speakers in the studio & still hear the song" category. Always friggin' hated it, especially the ending.

34. LIVE EVERY MOMENT - REO SPEEDWAGON

As a rock-leaning Top 40 station, I'm sure we played this. Damned if I can remember it, though. I DO remember playing "Ridin' The Storm Out" by them when our location was in a Tornado Warning. I spent the next 15 minutes in the bathroom.

33. OH SHEILA - READY FOR THE WORLD

We didn't play this as it was too R&B for our rotation, but it's still an all-time jam. I tell ya...reading these charts every week, I'm surprised by how many hits we didn't play because they were more "urban" ( as the phrase went back then ). Although we DID play a lot of 'em on our AM station. It kinda gets a guy to wondering...

31. DRESS YOU UP - MADONNA

I remember we had a "No More Madonna" promotion, with shirts & regular rotation of an awful novelty song of the same name ( ) . She probably made more money in the 3 minutes it took to play that song that the station did in its entire run.

29. SHAME - MOTELS

Pretty much the end of their run of popularity. Shame, too - always really liked them.

28. GET IT ON (BANG A GONG) - POWER STATION

"I think that's illegal in some states" - an on air line used by the guy who was on before me, that stuck in my noggin for some reason.

27. PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE - DEPECHE MODE

Pretty sure we didn't play this, but absolutely no idea why.

16. YOU SPIN ME ROUND - DEAD OR ALIVE

Same here, but my guess is it was too dance-y.

8. IF YOU LOVE SOMEBODY SET THEM FREE - STING

I remember seeing this tour at Sandstone Ampitheatre here in KC, & calling in a report to the station after the show.

7. SUMMER OF '69 - BRYAN ADAMS

Not really my bag, but I remember listening to "Reckless" all the way thru several years ago, & realizing that as far as sheer craft goes, it was no wonder it was a monster on the radio. That whole friggin' album is like some kinda massive-sounding robot, completely made to be cranked over the airwaves & in arenas.

5. FREEWAY OF LOVE - ARETHA FRANKLIN

Now, THIS we played the loving bejeezus out of. I guess if you were a black artist, you had to be Top 5 before we played you? ( shrugs ) Looking back, I really am bewildered by the lack of artists of color we played. And after reconnecting with our program director years later on Facebook & finding out he was a Trump guy...really makes me wonder. Reeeeeeeeeally makes me wonder.

4. ST. ELMO'S FIRE - JOHN PARR

Hated it then. Hated it now.

1. THE POWER OF LOVE - HUEY LEWIS & THE NEWS

Man, they were massive back then. I dunno why they catch so much stick...they were a perfectly fine rock/pop group.

BTW - I checked out the REO Speedwagon song on YouTube, & yeah - we played it. Forgot all about that song.

But I just remembered a guy who worked overnights named Ray, & how one night he had a mouth malfunction & called them REO Speedweegon on the air. That stuck with me, & I like to call them that to this day. I also remember Ray used to like to smoke weed out of a soda can in the studio.

Maybe that's where the extra "ee" came from - he was thinking about his weed.

Hard to believe he didn't work there that long.

29 songs. A good one this week.

This part of the 80's was probably the best for me listening wise. A lot of stuff I still listen to today.
