35. SIGN OF THE TIMES - PRINCE

Aside from the inexplicable and bizarre appeal of "Kiss", everything Prince did after Purple Rain and before the Batman Soundtrack can be trashed in my opinion.

34. AT THIS MOMENT - BILLY VERA & THE BEATERS

Ugh.

30. THE FINER THINGS - STEVE WINWOOD

"Vagina things keep shinin' through..."

17. THE FINAL COUNTDOWN - EUROPE

About 5 years ago, Sirius Kids Place played this song every day. I guess the under 10 crowd loves it?

16. KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF - GEORGIA SATELLITES

Dan Baird's solo song "I Love You Period" is another fun one from this guy.

14. I WANNA GO BACK - EDDIE MONEY

Never knew this was a cover.

11. FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT (TO PARTY) - BEASTIE BOYS

With hair metal in a slump (Ratt 'Dancing Undercover', Twisted Sister 'Come Out & Play', Quiet Riot 'QR3', etc), this kicked some much needed life into 'rebel against your parents' rock. First time I heard it on the radio, I thought "YEAH that's what I need right now!"

Some songs that will never make it into the Top 40:
#50 A-Ha "Cry Wolf"
#54 Sammy Hagar "Winner Takes It All"
#59 Survivor "How Much Love"
#67 Ratt "Dance"
#73 Pretenders "My Baby"
#75 Patty Smyth "Never Enough"
#79 Run DMC "It's Tricky"
#86 Paul Simon "The Boy In The Bubble"
#90 Til Tuesday "Coming Up Close"
#100 Daryl Hall "Someone Like You"

Loved this album. Battleship Chains was another good one. Shame they didn't have more a successful run than just one Hit

I agree The Beastie Boy's set the stage for Grunge and it marked the beginning of end of Hair Metal.

Agreed.

Yeah I was very surprised! In fact, Eddie was the third person to release it.

"I Wanna Go Back" is a 1984 song by American rock band Billy Satellite, written by band members Monty Byrom, Danny Chauncey, and Ira Walker, that achieved major popularity when recorded by Eddie Money in 1986. Another version was recorded by former Santana/Journey keyboardist/singer Gregg Rolie for his self-titled 1985 debut solo album.

40. ONE - METALLICA

I'm shocked they don't play the 4:58 edit. Not complaining, just surprised they subject the "Eternal Flame"/"Lost In Your Eyes"-loving gum-chompers to the full version.

39. FEELS SO GOOD - VAN HALEN

World's worst synth sound ever? VH lost me on this album. It's not terrible, but lord it's not great either. At least 6 of its songs can go right in the trash.

37. THE LOVE IN YOUR EYES - EDDIE MONEY

I bought his Greatest Hits tape back in '89 and was disappointed when this still-fresh top 40 hit wasn't on it, but at least 5 not-hits (not top 40 anyway) were on there instead.

36. ORINOCO FLOW (SAIL AWAY) - ENYA

From Metallica to Enya. Polar opposites. Love it.

29. SURRENDER TO ME - ANN WILSON & ROBIN ZANDER

Poor attempt to create "Almost Paradise - The Sequel". Horrible.

25. LIKE A PRAYER - MADONNA
23. STRAIGHT UP - PAULA ABDUL

Two of the biggest songs of the late 80s. Two of the songs I hate the most from the late 80s. Can't change the channel fast enough.

22. CRYIN' - VIXEN

Alan said this group isn't forgotten. Who (aside from Sirius) is spinning them? I haven't heard them anywhere else since '89.

Some songs that will never make the Top 40:
#42 Dino 24/7
#55 Fixx "Driven Out"
#57 Simply Red "It's Only Love"
#60 Carly Simon "Let The River Run"
#70 Steve Winwood "Hearts On Fire"
#78 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"
#86 Duran Duran "Do You Believe In Shame?"
#93 Cheap Trick "Never Had A Lot To Lose"
#94 Kenny Loggins "Tell Her"

24. DOWN UNDER - MEN AT WORK

Lawsuit of the millennium.

Down Under composers to pay for breach

18. I'VE GOT A ROCK AND ROLL HEART - ERIC CLAPTON

Very forgotten song. Can't say I've missed it, but I probably haven't heard it since '83.

16. DER KOMMISSAR - AFTER THE FALL

I prefer this English cover version to the Falco original. But I'm repeating myself - I mentioned this a couple months ago when I was talking about the English version of "99 Luftballons".

9. ONE ON ONE - DARYL HALL & JOHN OATES

Surprised at these 4. Mexican Radio was huge back then (of course it may have been a bigger hit on Canadian radio). The other 3 have had plenty of play post 1983 that one would think they did better in 1983 (don't like the Weather Girls and wished it got the play of a #86 hit but still).

ETA: thanx for doing this. Cool to see the stuff that didn't make it.
