40: WISHING (IF I HAD A PHOTOGRAPH OF YOU)– A FLOCK OF SEAGULLS

We're talking about 'one hit wonders' on here. Here's my very lengthy opinion (feel free to ignore it!)

The current definition in Wikipedia (yeah yeah I know, it's a starting place anyway) is "The term is most commonly used in regard to music performers with only one top-40 hit single that overshadows their other work". But if a band has a #39 hit, then a #41 hit, by this definition they're a one hit wonder?

How about someone who has one song make the Hot 100, and it peaks at #41. So they aren't a one hit wonder because it didn't actually reach the top 40?

Frankie Goes To Hollywood is a one hit wonder in the US (certainly not the UK) by this definition. But what if "Two Tribes" peaked at #40 instead of #43. That would make them NOT a one hit wonder then?

So it's tough to have a specific, rigid standard to determine if someone is a one hit wonder. And I often disagree when I see a band that's had 2+ Hot 100 entries (or especially 2+ top 40 entries) be labeled a one hit wonder. But I don't have a good definition. If I had to come up with one, I'd say "one song in the top 40, no other hot 100 hits".

39: DON’T PAY THE FERRYMAN – CHRIS DEBURGH

That Wikipedia definition of one hit wonder doesn't work with this guy. "Lady In Red" and that's it! The #34 peak of this long forgotten song can't convince me he's not a one hit wonder.

38: THE CLOSER YOU GET - ALABAMA
37: ALL MY LIFE – KENNY ROGERS
36: STRANGER IN MY HOUSE – RONNIE MILSAP

Early 80s country crossover stragglers. I was surprised to hear them this far into MTV's reign.

35: ROLL ME AWAY – BOB SEGER & THE SILVER BULLET BAND
33: NO TIME FOR TALK – CHRISTOPHER CROSS
32: BABY JANE – ROD STEWART
31: I WON’T HOLD YOU BACK - TOTO
30: THAT’S LOVE – JIM CAPALDI
28: ALL THIS LOVE - DeBARGE
27: THE WOMAN IN YOU – THE BEE GEES
24: WE TWO – LITTLE RIVER BAND
10: AFFAIR OF THE HEART – RICK SPRINGFIELD
9: DON’T LET IT END - STYX

Has anyone (aside from 80s on 8) played any of these since 1983? I doubt it!

22: COME DANCING - THE KINKS

I know I'm 'supposed' to say my favorite Kinks songs are "You Really Got Me", "All Day And All Of The Night", "Lola" and "Tired Of Waiting" but my faves are "Come Dancing", "Destroyer" and "Do It Again".

Songs that will never reach the top 40:
#51 New Edition "Candy Girl"
#55 Thompson Twins "Love On Your Side"
#59 Devo "Theme From Doctor Detroit"
#61 Sherriff "When I'm With You" <- Onederland calls this a one hit wonder, it peaked at #61
#73 Berlin "The Metro"
#77 Weird Al "Ricky"
#83 Joan Armatrading "Drop The Pilot"
#84 U2 "New Year's Day"
#89 Joe Walsh "Space Age Whiz Kids"
#96 Planet P "Why Me"

I use a looser definition of 1 hit wonder. 1 huge hit. And no more than 1 other hit which does not come close to other hits success or staying power. Chumbawumba and the Knack to me are 1 hitters even though each had a moderate top 40 hit follow up. It's all very subjective. I know what it is but I'll be damned if I can properly define it.

Add Father Christmas to that list for me please.
That's one of my favorite XMas songs.

I like Come Dancing, Destroyer and Lola. Don't like You Really Got Me at all.

#84 U2 "New Year's Day"

Loved Ricky but can see why its not top 40.
Surprised with the U2 song.

@HecticArt

YES! I forgot about "Father Xmas". My top 5 Kinks:
#1 "Come Dancing"
#2 "Destroyer"
#3 "Father Xmas"
#4 "Do It Again"
#5 "Lola"

@IdRatherBeSkiing

In the US, Chumbawumba had one Hot 100 hit. The next highest for them was #1 on the Bubbling Under, so def a one hit wonder in my book.

But The Knack is an interesting one. I feel like they're a one hit wonder too, but they reached #11 and #38 with 2 other (long forgotten) songs. So 'staying power' seems to be a factor subjectively. In their peak, a band could say "we hit #1, then we hit #11 so we aren't one hit wonders!" But if the #11 song gets completely forgotten, people would start calling them one hit wonders (like The Knack).

I tend to think of The Knack as one hit wonders, but they don't even fit my definition above!!

Here in Canada Chumbawumba had a second top 40 from same album. I think it was called Amnesia or Short Term Memory loss but ironically I have forgotten the exact title.

Okay 14
Bad 17

39. DIGGING YOUR SCENE - BLOW MONKEYS

Let's hope that band name is "adjective-noun" and not "verb-noun"...

36. THE LOVE PARADE - DREAM ACADEMY
19. VIENNA CALLING - FALCO

We were just talking about one-hit wonders. So, Dream Academy & Falco - yes or no?

35. DREAMS - VAN HALEN

One of my fav songs as a teen. Nowadays, it's good but not great.

22. SLEDGEHAMMER - PETER GABRIEL

I'm in the middle of listening to So DNA ('DNA: The Evolution of the Songs from So' - An Interview with Dickie Chappell - PeterGabriel.com) and it's fascinating how this song evolved from early demos to final product.

21. RAIN ON THE SCARECROW - JOHN COUGAR MELLENCAMP

Big fan of Uh-Huh and Whenever We Wanted. The intervening albums are okay, but too focused on worrying about farms and providing a soundtrack for hoe-downs. I admire his intention to aid farmers and such, but my preference is the gritty balls-out rock of songs like "Play Guitar" and "Get A Leg Up".

20. TUFF ENUFF - FABULOUS THUNDERBIRDS

I was just talking about this song on Twitter last month.

16. IS IT LOVE - MR. MISTER

Still like this entire album. A little tired of "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings" but I can still enjoy the whole thing start to finish.

14. WHO'S JOHNNY - EL DEBARGE

No disconnect!!

7. A DIFFERENT CORNER - GEORGE MICHAEL

Yyyyyyyyyyyyyyawn

2. LIVE TO TELL - MADONNA

LIVE TO TELL - MADONNA
i can't stand most of madonna's 80s songs. this one i don't mind. in fact, her movie songs like Into The Groove and Crazy For You seem to be better than her others to me, for whatever reason.

1. ON MY OWN - PATTI LABELLE & MICHAEL MCDONALD

Forgot this song existed. Life was better that way.

Songs that will never make the top 40
#54 INXS "Listen Like Thieves"
#58 Art Of Noise "Peter Gunn"
#60 Psychedelic Furs "Pretty In Pink"
#70 Stevie Nicks "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You"
#74 Krokus "School's Out"
#78 Diana Ross "Chain Reaction"
#79 Kim Carnes "Divided Hearts"
#83 John Cafferty "Voice Of American Sons"
#84 New Edition "With You All The Way"
#85 Jackson Browne "In The Shape Of A Heart"
#87 Del Fuegos "I Still Want You"
#90 Stevie Wonder "Land Of La La"
