I liked this week's countdown. Lots of good songs in 1984 I liked all of these
40. CATCH ME I'M FALLING - REAL LIFE
...
22. A FINE FINE DAY - TONY CAREY

Nothing above #22?

36. GIRLS - DWIGHT TWILLEY

Haven't heard this since '84.

35. ROCK YOU LIKE A HURRICANE - SCORPIONS

My introduction to the Scorpions. It was one of the few songs pre-90's that had a 'bad word' in it (bitch) that didn't get edited out (like "Who Are You" and "Shakin'"). 13 year old me always got wide-eyed when this song came on, like "Ooo a swear is about to come over the radio!"

31. LEAVE IT - YES

I have a cassette tape of a friend and I singing this song together back in '87. I use the term "singing" loosely. We were a couple of goofballs. Hearing the original often reminds me of this, and makes me laugh.

27. WHITE HORSE - LAID BACK

I wonder if the word bitch got edited out of this one for radio back then, or if they left it in like "Rock You Like A Hurricane"? I had to skip it because my young son was in the room.

26. THE REFLEX - DURAN DURAN

I was a closet DD fan. I was "too metal" to admit publicly I liked some of this "chick band's" music. Reflex was ok, but I liked New Moon On Monday better. I hated (and still hate) Union Of The Snake though.

23. I'LL WAIT - VAN HALEN

Like Alan said, I'm surprised there was never a video for this one. I was surprised to hear DLR didn't want the song on the album.

22. A FINE FINE DAY - TONY CAREY

Haven't heard this since '84. Never knew this is the same guy who did "Why Me?" - which is a great song

15. DON'T ANSWER ME - THE ALAN PARSONS PROJECT

Haven't heard this since '84.

13. TONIGHT - KOOL & THE GANG

Haven't heard this since '84.

11. OH SHERRIE - STEVE PERRY

Nina mentioned Martha Quinn when talking about this song. I think it's the first time Martha's name's been brought up since the (final) time she disappeared from the VJ 40 (aside from when they play the old bumpers).

9. LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE BOY - DENIECE WILLIAMS

Guilty pleasure.

8. THEY DON'T KNOW - TRACEY ULLMAN

I friggin' hate this song.

6. TO ALL THE GIRLS I'VE LOVED BEFORE - JULIO IGLESIAS & WILLIE NELSON

How the heck did this thing chart so high?

Will never reach the top 40:
#45 Debarge "Love Me In A Special Way"
#47 Cameo "She's Strange"
#60 Queen "I Want To Break Free"
#62 David Gilmour "Blue Light"
#72 Genesis "Illegal Alien"
#74 INXS "Original Sin"
#77 Weird Al "King Of Suede"
#80 LaToya Jackson "Heart Don't Lie"
#81 Kenny Rogers "Eyes That See In The Dark"
#87 Spandau Ballet "Communication"
#89 Frank Stallone "Darlin'"
#90 Luther Vandross "Superstar/Until You Come Back To Me"
#93 Mr Mister "Hunters Of The Night"
#95 Dolly Parton "Downtown"
#100 John Lennon "I'm Steppin' Out"

I like that one actually... It's like a throwback to the 1960's girl group songs.

I like a good throwback song ("For The Longest Time", "Rock This Town", etc) and I dig some of the 60s girl group songs ("Please Mr Postman", "My boyfriend's Back", etc) but for some reason "You Don't Know" just doesn't work for me. Nails on a chalkboard.

I was reading (on Wikipedia so take it with a grain of salt) that Tracey Ullman is SUPER rich. Had no idea!

Ullman is currently the richest female British comedian and the third richest British comedian overall. She is also the second richest British actress.

not a fan of most songs on this countdown. there were only 5 songs I really like in this countdown. there were another 9 that are 'ok' but I wouldn't generally go out of my way for them.

37. THINK ABOUT ME – FLEETWOOD MAC

tusk is one disappointing friggin album. aside from this song, tusk and sara, it's a bizarre experimental cluster-f*** of intentionally odd songs. it's 'trying too hard to be kooky'. the only other track i like on it is 'what makes you think you're the one'. and i don't even like it a lot.

34. WONDERING WHERE THE LIONS ARE – BRUCE COCKBURN

first heard this a couple years ago on Coffee House, good song!

28. TRAIN IN VAIN – THE CLASH

interesting story about how this almost wasn't on the album and simply put on a flexi-disc for NME. it was their first US hit, but that probably wouldn't have happened if the original plans went through.

20. BRASS IN POCKET – THE PRETENDERS

can't hear this song without thinking of the music video where the band members point at their menu and say "special!" so corny, but hey it worked because here i am still thinking about it 3 decades later.

5. ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL – PINK FLOYD

great to hear while listening to the whole album, but on its own i really don't care for it. in fact, i feel that way about every song on 'the wall' except for 'run like hell'. on their own, these songs are kinda meh. as a complete package, it's an excellent album.

1. CALL ME - BLONDIE

i've never understood why this song was so huge. never appealed to me. i don't hate it, but biggest-selling and Billboard's #1 song of the whole year? grammy nominated? one of Rolling Stone's greatest songs of all time? i don't get it.

Will never reach the Top 40:
#42 Anne Murray "Lucky Me"
#58 B52s "Rock Lobster"
#61 Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers "Here Comes My Girl"
#70 Survivor "Somewhere In America"
#80 Pink Floyd "Run Like Hell"
#83 Knack "Can't Put A Price On Love"
#91 Neil Diamond "The Good Lord Loves You"
#92 Fools "It's A Night For Beautiful Girls"

A bit surprising. Those songs are heard a lot today.

#80 Pink Floyd "Run Like Hell"

Great song but Pink Floyd didn't chart well (except for Another Brick) so I guess no surprise.

39: VOICES CARRY - 'TIL TUESDAY

Opinions wanted. I'm in a female-fronted heavy rock band (similar to Evanescence/Halestorm). Currently we have no cover songs, only do originals. I keep suggesting we cover this song, but I can't get everyone on board. Our singer recently said, "I think it's too passé. No one will know it." What do you guys think? Good cover or waste of time?

37: RASPBERRY BERET - PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTION

Still can't believe Prince followed up 1999 and Purple Rain with this song. Blech!

31: NEVER ENDING STORY - LIMAHL

I can and only ever will be reminded of this each time I hear this song:

neverendingsoda.gif

29: SUSSUDIO - PHIL COLLINS

For those also curious about what the hell Sussudio means...

I started to sing into the microphone, and this word came out, which was 'sus-sussudio.' It just literally came out ... so I kind of knew I had to find something else for that word, then I went back and tried to find another word that scanned as well as 'sussudio,' and I couldn't find one, so I went back to 'sussudio.'

21: WALKING ON SUNSHINE - KATRINA & THE WAVES

= $1,000,000 a year (mind = blown)

18: JUST A GIGOLO/I AIN'T GOT NOBODY - DAVID LEE ROTH

Video > Song

16: IN MY HOUSE - MARY JANE GIRLS

Guilty pleasure. Same with Pebbles "Girlfriend". Not my usual cup o' tea but somehow they work.

13: DON'T COME AROUND HERE NO MORE - TOM PETTY

Barely sounds like Petty to me (aside from the voice of course). More Dave Stewart than Heartbreakers in here, that's for sure.

2: CRAZY FOR YOU - MADONNA

One of the few Madonna songs I can stand. "Into The Groove" and "Live To Tell" are a couple others.

1: DON'T YOU (FORGET ABOUT ME) - SIMPLE MINDS

Didn't like this song until I saw the movie. Loved it since. Needed the film to give it context.

Will never make the top 40
#57 Bon Jovi "Only Lonely"
#58 Frankie Goes To Hollywood "Welcome To The Pleasure Dome"
#61 Peter Wolf "Oo-Ee-Diddley-Bop"
#62 Natalie Cole "Dangerous"
#63 Gino Vinelli "Black Cars"
#66 Pointer Sisters "Baby Come And Get It"
#72 Dokken "Alone Again"
#73 Firm "Satisfaction Guaranteed"
#89 Hooters "All You Zombies"
#93 Rick James "Can't Stop"
#94 Freddie Mercury "I Was Born To Love You"
#96 Kurtis Blow "Basketball"
