80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

My tastes can be unpredictable. But they're honest. I don't get into a song just because everyone else does, I'm not concerned with how it makes me look to others if I hate The Doors, Grateful Dead, Audioslave, Green Day, Nirvana unplugged, etc.

And in reverse, I like a lot of pop & AC songs that are quite cheesy and frivolous and appeal mostly to bimbos, douchebags and/or old ladies, but I'll come right out and say I like 'em. A good example of a song I like that I got shit over is "Butterfly Kisses" by Bob Carlisle. Or the fact that my inner Subaru-driving lesbian alter-ego loves early Indigo Girls music!

I see sadchild has not yet posted his predictions. If he is reading this: *SPOILERS AHEAD*.

John Lennon wrote Nobody Told Me (originally titled Everybody';s Talkin', Nobody's Talkin') in 1976 and recorded it in 1980 during the sessions for the Double Fantasy album. He decided to not include it on the album. Instead, he gave the song to Ringo Starr, who planned to record it for his Stop & Smell The Roses album, with Lennon producing. After Lennon was assassinated. Ringo decided to not record the song. Lennon's recording was released on January 6., 1984 and reached #5 on the Hot 100. The video includes George Harrison, Phil Spector, Fred Astaire, Dick Cavett, Andy Warhol, Miles Davis and – of course – Yoko Ono.

I see sadchild has not yet posted his predictions.
Wow I forgot!

Here are my original predictions

EARLIER
Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse"
Kenny/Dolly "Islands In The Stream"
Lionel "All Night Long"
Michael/Paul "Say Say Say"

CANDIDATES
Culture Club "Karma Chameleon"
Yes "Owner Of A Lonely Heart"

LATER
Van Halen "Jump"
Kenny Loggins "Footloose"

Here's how it shook out. Amazingly well, actually. My prediction of which songs would be on the Hot 100 was perfect! My only goof is reversing Karma and Owner's order!

Kenny/Dolly "Islands In The Stream" #67
Lionel "All Night Long" #47
Michael/Paul "Say Say Say" #7
Yes "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" #1
Culture Club "Karma Chameleon" #2

Van Halen "Jump" #20
Kenny Loggins "Footloose" #56

white: on my list
green: my candidates
brown: missing from my list
orange: on my list but not on hot 100 this week

However, I will say that I was trying to figure out what came after Footloose and couldn't think of the next 4 in a row. Yikes!

The "correct order" part of the post above should have this above Kenny/Dolly
Bonnie Tyler "Total Eclipse" #96

Good 20
Okay 3
Bad 17

39: THE DREAM (HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAM)- IRENE CARA
36: REMEMBER THE NIGHTS - MOTELS
33: NIGHTBIRD - STEVIE NICKS

These didn't sound familiar, but I searched and saw that I've heard them on a past VJ or two.

25: SO BAD - PAUL McCARTNEY

39: THE DREAM (HOLD ON TO YOUR DREAM)- IRENE CARA
36: REMEMBER THE NIGHTS - MOTELS
33: NIGHTBIRD - STEVIE NICKS

These didn't sound familiar, but I searched and saw that I've heard them on a past VJ or two.
I'd loved the obscurity of some of the songs in the 40-30 range. I didn't remember the Irene Cara track until I heard it. I remembered seeing the video. The song was from the D.C. Cab soundtrack. I didn't recognize the Motels song, but enjoyed it. I heard "Nightbird" on a recording of my town's former pop station on YouTube dated January 18, 1984.

1: OWNER OF A LONELY HEART - YES
Interesting. If next week is 1988, we'll hear Yes at #40 to start off the countdown. Also, it will would be another 40 peak week crossed off the list. Yes "Rhythm of Love". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for one week. - 2/6/88

BTW, we'll have to wait another year for this one: L.T.D. "Shine On". I didn't find a listing for this week. Held the #40 position for one week. - 1/31/81
Will never get into the top 40
#43 Rick James/Smokey Robinson "Ebony Eyes"
This is a peak position.
#52 Prince "Let's Pretend We're Married"
This is a peak position too.
#62 Patti LaBelle "If Only You Knew"
#1 R&B hit.
#79 D Train "Something's On Your Mind"
I didn't realize D Train charted on the 100.
#80 Twilight 22 "Electric Kingdom"
Their rap delivery reminds me of Run-DMC.
#87 Billy Idol "Rebel Yell"
Always shocking at first glance to see this in the never make the 40 list.
#98 ConFunkShum "Baby I'm Hooked"
ConFunkShum s/b Con Funk Shun

Comments:

  • There are eight debuts/reentries this week.
  • "Joystick" is another one of those filthy songs where I didn't realize the meaning as a kid.
  • All the tracks fared better on other charts.

From 1983 to 1986 , 93.1 FM in Los Angeles was "Hitradio 93" KKHR. (Since 2005, 93.1 has been "Jack FM" KCBS-FM.) Here is an aircheck of Jack Armstrong (real name: John Larsh), who also worked at KFI, KFRC, KTNQ, WAYS, WMEX, WKBW, WIXY, WKYC, CHUM and many other stations during his 45-year-career. He always opened his shows with audio of Moe Howard from the Three Stooges short Micro-Phonies: "Quiet, numbskulls, I'm broadcasting!"
