A few months ago our cable started carrying this bizarre channel called "Decades". They show the same 6 hour block 4 times each day. The block usually has one movie, some old tv shows, and a news magazine focused on this day in history and how it was portrayed on TV. The movie and old tv shows are generally related to what was covered in the news magazine.
The news magazine is called "Through the Decades". It's hosted by Bill Kurtis, Kerry Sayers and Ellee Pai Hong. It's all pleasant enough, and sometimes quite interesting, but Ms. Hong's name obsesses me. Every time they introduce her, I say to myself "That Ellee is a total pie hong. She's always hongin' all the pie. Poor Kerry Sayers never gets any pie."
Now the word "hong" permeates my speech. When my wife kept hold of the menu too long, I called her Ellee Menu Hong. When Waze had me getting off and on the freeway at every exit, I was hongin' all the exits. I've been singing "Hong on Sloopy", "Hongin' a Line", "Just an Old Fashioned Love Hong", and my favorite "Hong a Hong".
The other night Memegirl and I were at the movies and a trailer came on for "Psycho-Pass: The Movie". The villain is Mr. Hong. I whispered to her "his name is Hong!", then a little later, "that's only interesting to someone who has made up a language based on that word and forgotten it's really someone's name."
I've come unhonged.
