Work Gripes

As a side note, we are now required to put labeling on any new office documents we create. We can't save a new document without going through a 5-step labeling process. Once the documents are labeled, the company can easily track them, and control how they are moved. But the stuff I copied today was all created before 2018, with no labeling. Had I edited any of the documents, I would've had to label them.
Sounds almost like a TPS report header.

Family-owned company. We don't have any restrictions in place. As the IT guy, I do hate how much people use work email for personal things. Someone retired a few years ago and asked me to keep their email address live because they had personal stuff tied to it. I'm a dick if I say no, I'm a dick if I go to the execs and explain the situation, I'm a dick if they discover I let it through without asking them, I'm a dick no matter what I do. So I just kept it quiet then shut it down a year later.

I think I mentioned this before, but the things I developed for the first half of my career (and still work to support), Test Program Sets, are referred to as TPSs. A TPS consists of both the software and hardware necessary to test a product on a specific piece of test equipment. We produce many documents that are some kind of TPS report. So when the movie came out, it really floored me.

Because of the nature of my workplace, I never even thought about using my work email for anything extraneous to work.

That has to be co-incidence. I figured TPS was completely made up. A nonsensical acronym.

Haha, yes. But a bunch of us watched the movie really closely, trying to determine if they ever say what a "TPS" is. And there were plenty of times we wondered if the script was partially based on the experiences of someone who worked in our company.

TPS Group – it stands for Technical Publications Service – is an Italian company specializiing in engineering, tech publishing, avionics and I.T. They also have a U.S. headquarters, TPS of America, in Lansing, Michigan. If you want to buy shares of TPS, they're at 6.90 right now – $7.45 in Yankee dollars.

So this is both fucked-up and a learning experience for me. Our work email is Outlook, and it shows the typical preview of each email that comes in, plus there's a pane on the right that shows the content of whatever email you're pointing to. Something like this (not my email)

The preview shows 3 lines: the sender, the subject, and the 1st line of the content. Or at least that's what I thought it was. This afternoon, I got an email with a strange 1st line - strange for a work email. What I'm showing below is a bit of the content of the email (I changed my work email address). There's nothing wrong with the content.

They're trying to get money from me, for a cause that I've given to in the past through my employer. But here's how the preview showed-up:

The name of the sender matches the body of the email, and the subject line also goes with the content. But look at the next line; it's supposed to be the 1st line of the email, but it's about supporting some sort of Birthright program, where they send people of Jewish heritage to Israel! It has nothing to do with the content of the email, and I was quite surprised to see something about Jewish Adults and Israel in the preview.

All I can conclude is that this guy fundraises for a bunch of things, and he knows how to customize what the preview says. But the downside is that if you're not careful, it'll say the wrong thing. Maybe you guys know more about it than me.

It looks like a phishing scam.
Maybe the scammer got into the original guys email.

Every now and then I get an email from one of our old DRC admins that starts off with a chunk of a legit email from several years ago, then it has something fresh with a file attachment. It’s pure scam. Aaron might get the same one sometimes.

Well, it's a milestone. A work milestone anyway. 40 years. When I used to think about hitting 40 years, I imagined going out to lunch with my longtime work friends. But now, most of them have already retired; and being remote, I'm not currently in-touch with any of the ones still around. Except that when the Mrs. was on her car trip, I met an old work friend for dinner. So we kind-of celebrated a few weeks ago.

I have to decide on a gift that I can pick from a catalog, like an espresso maker, or wireless headphones, or a watch. Don't know what to pick.

I'm at 30 years. (Not the same place)
If you count cumulative totals, it's not quite the same thing. My first marriage technically lasted 10 years, and I'm over 25 on this one. But we're not celebrating 35 years.

This October will be 25 years for me. I'm max'd out on vacation time (five weeks) so I get an extra full paycheck every year starting next year!
I maxed out on vacation (5 weeks) at the 12 year point. That was 28 years ago. After that, we get nothing. I mean, we have annual performance sharing, but it's not tied to vacation time.

I am in my 24th year. But when they hired me the started my vacation counter 1 year earlier so I get a bonus week of vacation this year (my 25th year). They did this so they could give me 4 weeks vacation from the start (1st year only gets 3) which was a condition of me signing the offer.
