In keeping with the universal laws of conservation, when one thing goes bad (Mother-in-law living with us), everything else turns-up surprisingly good. This starts out as a work gripe, but ends differently.
As all of you know, I've been working for the same employer since these were new.
I worked my way up the food chain fairly quickly, while sticking to an engineering path. By the end of the 90's, I had been elevated to a Level II Senior engineer. Then in the early 2000s, there were a lot of changes and upheavals in our organization and management. It got to a point where I needed to look for something different, within or outside the company. A department head offered me a role in the startup of a new line of work, within our existing organization. I was guaranteed that I wouldn't have to deal with any of the old crap from anyone.
And it worked out. And to this day, I am still in that line of work which allows me to do my job 100% from home. But what I lost was being on top of the (old) game, and I was no longer being recognized for a promotion. A series of indifferent managers didn't help.
As I had mentioned, at the same time Hectic was interviewing to change jobs, I was as well. But while it didn't work out for me, I did get a new manager, who seemed to pay attention to my willingness to do whatever was asked of me. After this year began, we had our annual reviews. And I learned that my management put me in for a promotion. But down the road, I was told it got rejected by our HR. I kept hearing that they were "looking into" why, but I wasn't getting an answer.
Well the reason I wasn't getting an explanation is that my manager was persistently trying to make it happen, and got it approved as part of their mid-year actions. Yesterday I was informed that I got the promotion to Principal engineer, and they threw-in another raise too. Hooray!
