The Random Sports Thread

I watched the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl from Tuscon on TV Saturday. It looked like Snoop Dogg was having a blast doing the coin toast, leading the bands and announcing the 3rd quarter. Maybe even having more fun than his Netflix NFL halftime show

The Southwest Stakes is the first Kentucky Derby prep race of the year I follow. It is Saturday. It would be nice to see the winner of the race in this year's Kentucky Derby line up. Last years winner, Speed King, did not have enough points to qualify for the Kentucky Derby. But there were still 4 horses in this race that made it to the Kentucky Derby. Tiztastic, eventual winner of the Louisiana Derby, American Promise, eventual winner of the Virginia Derby, Publisher, got some 2nd's and 3rd's to qualify and that crazy horse Sandman which would run erratically and I thought was going to wipe out half of the field in the race at the Kentucky Derby, eventually won the Arkansas Derby. I do not make bets just like to watch the horses run for the Derby

I haven't posted about the Kentucky Derby in a month. A horse I'm rooting for this weekend to his punch his ticket into the Derby is the underdog "Balboa" racing at the Gotham Stakes. If he can win this race, he should make the field than I'd like to see him go the distance

I didn't know the Derby was this weekend, until now. The TV coverage starts at like 3 pm, but the race happens around 6 or 7 pm, if I remember.

Do you have Woodford Reserve for the Derby Scotch
We used to go our neighbors. They would hold a Kentucky Derby Party. We would get all dressed up and wear out hats.
But they have moved so I just watch it at home now which is fine to me too
One year, we went to a friend's watch party. He got the Woodford Reserve, and all the women wore hats. I think they were drinking mojitos. That was fun.

I occasionally break-up my scotch routine with bourbon. But I usually don't buy Woodford Reserve. The ones I like are Uncle Nearest 1856, and Eagle Rare single barrel. But Woodford is the official sponsor of the Kentucky Derby.

The very early 2026 Kentucky Derby Power Rankings. My new favorite is Silent Tactic. Southwest Stakes winner. He has some style and 50 points. I was rooting for Balboa but he did not win or place last weekend. His chances of making the Derby are fleeting.

I want to see the Toronto Rock play tonight. They played the Saskatchewan Rush. It was a National Lacrosse League game. The Toronto Rock play in Hamilton. Why they are Toronto Rock and not Hamilton Rock is not known. A friend gave us tickets. It was a fun night.

With the college basketball off for a few days, I was able to catch up with the Kentucky Derby point leaders. Over the weekend, Emerging Market edged out the top-rated horse Pavlovian in the Louisiana Derby. This weekend is the Arkansas Derby with Silent Tactic racing. Last year won by Sandman a wild running horse. I will also be watching Taptastic. The other big race this weekend is the Florida Derby with Chief Wallabee, Commandment, Nearly and The Puma. Last year won by Tappan Street who got injured afterward and Runner-up (Kentucky Derby Winner) Sovereignty

A good weekend of racing. My buddy "Silent Tactic" took 2nd at the Arkansas Derby and the Florida Derby has a close one between "Commandment" "The Puma"
and "Chief Wallabee" But a contender has been injured "Paladin". I hate to see that. He didn't have the best name but would have been up there. We have a candidate in a local Judge race with the last name of Huma. I've already been calling her "the Huma" because of "The Puma". On the other hand, I didn't like it last year in the Kentucky Derby Pre-Race Show when all the guest Olympic athletes were picking "Chuck of Gold" to win and he really didn't do anything great in the point season. "Journalism" was the best horse going into the race. "Chief Wallabee" runs a little wild similar to "Sandman" last year. If he can correct that by the Derby, I like him.

The College Hockey NCAA Frozen Four will be in Las Vegas this year.
And they got a great draw. Two Big 10 Teams: Michigan and Wisconsin. And the two best teams from the National Collegiate Hockey Conference: North Dakota and Denver. I watched the previews of all the Regional Final games. Good crowds. North Dakota, Michigan and Denver were dominate. I'd love to see the Badgers win the National Title but they kind've got lucky when Michigan State collapsed in the last 3 minutes of the Regional.
Game 1 will be Wisconsin vs North Dakota. Game 2 will be Denver vs Michigan. What a story it would be if Michigan won
the Basketball Championship then would have a chance to win the Hockey.

I will be reminiscing for the next two weeks when we went to Las Vegas in April 2004. We brought our own weather that week. It did not get somewhat hot until our last day there. We stayed at the Flamingo, went to Margaritaville, saw the water show at the Bellagio, the volcano at the Mirage, the pirate show at Treasure Island, took the gondola ride at the Venetian, took the Eiffel Tower ride at the Paris, had the buffet at Caesar's Palace and went to the Star Trek Experience at the LV Hilton. I will be watching plenty of Las Vegas videos from the comfort of my living room.

For the Frozen Four games, I don't have ESPN, so we could go to either Monk's Sports Bar, a new sports restaurant called Nob (14 Tv's) or the city brewery bar Full Mile. I felt bad for the manager there who just set up a nice sports dance bar with murals and a huge screen for Badger football games and they had a terrible season. Or maybe go into Madison to watch the games.
