On a related note, at what age do you lose your filter?
A person can spend most of their life kind of shy and reticent, but later and life they're barking their open thoughts at everyone.
I feel like since I hit 45 a couple years ago, the process is starting, haha. Speaking more freely at work and such.
I had to think about this one for a while. At the workplace, the general personality trait is the know-it-all who tells you how things should be done, and why every other way is wrong. But the young engineers do that as well. In fact, those are the ones who tend to advance faster. There's a certain deference to the wise, experienced senior engineer - but only with certain generations. Over the years, some of the younger ones have treated me with respect, while others see me as an old guy who's out of touch.

Among friends, we're pretty open and clear about what we'd like to go and do, and what we won't; what we like, and what we don't. But here's the big thing: with age comes the wisdom not to be a jerk, and an intolerance for putting-up with people acting like jerks. You can walk around unfiltered, but you'll be doing it alone. The significant others in one's life have also matured, and with that maturity, they've developed a self-respect that precludes going through life with an asshole. So people soften their personalities, and make more of an effort to get along. I saw it with my dad for the brief time he was at that point. And I saw it with my father-in-law. For me, it started several years ago.

I guess I’m really not a boat person. I can go to a bar or casino anywhere or stare at the clouds in my back yard. If I’m going somewhere, I want to see things and experience the journey.
It's strange for me to be defending cruises, since the Mrs. and I have decided not to do them anymore. But I think you're missing the point. Normally, if you flew to an island, or somewhere in South America, you'd spend hours cramped on a plane; then have to unpack all your stuff. You'd have to go searching for every meal, or go for the all-inclusive package. If you wanted to visit a few different places, you'd have to book hotels in each, travel, unpack etc.

For about half the cost, you can go to all the same places on a cruise. And while you're going to each destination, you're in the middle of essentially the Las Vegas strip. Tons of restaurants, buffets, shops, bars, pools, slides, climbing, fitness centers, live entertainment, and things to do with groups of friends or family. You also meet people, make friends, and have a good time. If you have kids, they can do their own activities and make friends, and you don't have to deal with them most of the time.

You don't have to rent a car, or drive on the wrong side of the road, or take a taxi, or wait for a shuttle. You can drink and not worry about driving. And for all the different sights you'll visit, you never have to unpack. It's perfect for a lazy person who doesn't want to plan or book a bunch of places or things, but would rather sit back and relax.

Have I convinced you?

I honestly think covid and the way a lot of people rethink closed spaces will ultimately kill the cruise ship industry. Either that or another one that sinks or gets stuck somewhere.

Maybe. But actually, the norovirus was wreaking havoc on cruise ships long before covid. And they got pretty intense with the whole sanitization thing. A friend of ours has already been back on a cruise.

My partner and I were suppose to go on a cruise in couple of months. We were going do an Alaskan cruise. With my recent job lose, now I have a new job again and putting money into the house. We decided to cancel and try again soon. I always wanted to go on a cruise and especially cruise around the Caribbean Islands.

You do understand that Alaska is not a Caribbean island don't you?

I think my deal is outside of the U.S. and Canada, the Caribbean countries wouldn't be my first choice of places to visit. If I was going to spend some money I'd want to see Europe. Otherwise I could see the time on a cruise ship being enjoyable.

Nope.

I like the adventure of discovering new places. Good local restaurants, ballparks, all of the things that make a city unique, the genius loci (spirit of place), seeing things on my schedule, staying longer if I like something, or leaving early if I don't. I don't want to visit with other schmucks from Ohio or Idaho when I'm exploring New Orleans. I don't want to eat at chain restaurants when I'm in New York, or at home either. I don't want a sanitized, curated, and simulated experience. A lot of the time getting from point A to point B is half of the fun. Like they say, sometimes the point of the journey, is not to arrive.

Outside of the US (and Canada kinda counts), which I don't really care to leave, I guess my top places to visit would be Japan and the UK countries. France can go f itself but I would like to see the Eiffel Tower in person.

I'd like to see the pyramids in Egypt and the riches of Dubai in the UAE. Indonesia would be interesting since that's where Hendrik was from but I have very little interest, and would be somewhat nervous, going to any nation that's not a democracy.

Would you guys wear contacts that had a HUD (heads up display) and augmented reality built into them? So basically your contacts could do everything your phone does now.

I wouldn't but not because I'm weary of the tech. It's because my 2 main fears in life are a catheter and anything touching my eyes. I'd love a modern version of Google Glass though. I'd happily wear glasses that took the place on my phone.

I hate the idea of things touching my eyes so much I've thought about if I could be in like a Guardians of the Galaxy and make a million bucks but had to have contacts to make my eyes look alien it would be a real struggle. I'd do it but it would be really hard for me. I hope to God I never need lasik. I don't think I could do it while conscious. If you knock me out, do whatever you want to me (cath, eye surgery) but just make sure it's over once I wake up.

Two valid fears right there.
I don’t see myself doing the contact lens phone thing. It seems more annoying than it would be worth.
That, and sticking a phone in my eye.
