I just learned this from an answer on Jeopardy tonight. I had no idea the word came from a guy's name:

A boycott is an act of nonviolent, voluntary and intentional abstention from using or buying a product, or dealing with a person, organization, or country as an expression of protest.

The word is named after Captain Charles Boycott, agent of an absentee landlord in Ireland, against whom the tactic was successfully employed after a suggestion by Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell and his Irish Land League in 1880.

For all the Worlde lovers and don't know if anyone follows the Holderness Family. I enjoy most of there parody songs and there latest release made me laugh. Plus they are on this latest season of the Amazing Race, which they are doing pretty well.

Growing up I just assumed the whole planet celebrated Mardi Gras as a major holiday and got the day/week off of school/work.

You guys have regional holidays like that, that others don't really observe?

Second year with no parades in town. 2021 due to pandemic. 2022 due to recovery from Hurricane Ida.
New Orleans still has lots of parades tomorrow but I don't feel like going. Will enjoy a day off from work for sure though.

Last night I was wondering if you'd be mentioning Mardi Gras.

Massachusetts has Patriot's Day, which is the day they run the Boston Marathon in mid-April (and occasionally get blown-up). Schools in Mass are closed, many big businesses are closed, and it's a state holiday. Early in the morning, they re-enact the battle of Lexington and Concord. There's always big crowds that come to watch that.

Pre-merger (our first merger in the late 90's), we had that day off every year. It also coincided with school vacation week. Now, there are a bunch of holidays we don't get off, so that we can have the end of the year off.

There's also Bunker Hill Day, which marks the Battle at Bunker Hill. Our community band plays in the parade, just north of Boston. But very few places close for that, except Charlestown schools.

And lets not forget Evacuation Day (no joke), which happens to be on the same day as St. Patrick's Day, March 17. It's an official holiday in Boston (Suffolk County). It's supposed to mark the British evacuation or something, but it's clearly an excuse to clear the way for Irish drinking.

And finally, there's St. Anthony's Feast in Boston's North End, at the end of August. Big Italian festival.

This woman sounds like a delight:

Oddly, that same approximate age and time married was when the Mrs. and I hit a rough patch. Must be something to it.

Nothing that ubiquitous. A lot of contractors will take the first day or two of hunting season off, but there isn't anything else that you can count on a lot of people disappearing, and it's just the outdoors types.

Just because they compliment you does not mean you have to marry them. Lol

“ She met her husband Bill after he emailed her to praise her writing and the two tied the knot in 2006. “

@scotchandcigar Nice summary of regional holidays. I forget about most of those most of the time.

Damn. This gets some kind of award. The kind of comment I start typing, then backspace while thinking "nah I can't post that". Well, usually backspace. Not always.
Must be something to it.
Right around the corner for me. My wife turns 45 soon. Wonder if it's a menopause thing? Either way, it will be interesting to watch her go from "I love you but you're always wrong and let me explain how everything's actually your fault" to "I hate you and you're always wrong and let me explain how everything's actually your fault."
