I bought a little bass practice amp tonight on ebay. $40 used, $119 new...it's a Behringer. Part German nihilist design, part vintage/retro with the tweed speaker cover and funky knobs and on/off switch. They review pretty well. I'm just afraid I'm gonna blow by guitar amp playing my bass on it on jam nights.

Line 6 has a great rep. Check out the Fender Mustangs too. They connect to your PC and pretty much give you modeling access to any effect you want, and you can download settings from other members of the "Fender Fuse" community. E.g., wanna sound like SRV? Download the setting.

Hectic plays in a band, Jon, but if you're playing at home (like me for the most part), 75 watts is Pete Townshend territory. Hell, 25 is loud enough.

It's been years since I've touched an electric guitar, but I can't imagine it being any more difficult to play than my acoustic. For what I want to do with it, I think an electric would be much more suitable, not to mention less of a painful experience.

If that guitar is still that painful, it needs a professional setup. Did you ever get that done?

Electrics and acoustics are just different instruments. You'll never get that chest-vibrating, woody, warm feel when you strum an electric like an acoustic gives you. But an electric is a requisite for rock. It's the difference between a nice bicycle ride and a getting on a Harley. Both can be good, depending on the situation.

I did get the truss rod adjusted, and it's not nearly as bad as it was, just after a half an hour of playing it's pretty fatiguing.

I'll just give up on the idea of learning barre chords, power chords and scales until I get the strat. Then stick some .09's on there and use the acoustic for basic practice and 'acoustic' songs.

True story. I used to use a 25 w Peavy practice amp that I bought in 1983 or so up until last summer. It was still plenty loud when I needed it to be. It could easily be too loud with a drummer, another guitar or two, and a bass all going at the same time. It still sounded good playing it quiet enough to not bother roommates the next room over too. I need to be really careful with the 75 so that I don't drive the Mrs crazy when I practice. It's got some balls. My stack head was a high school graduation gift back in 86. At 160 watts, it'll still make your ears bleed, but I can turn it down quieter than the 75. It's just too damn much work to take the thing....well......anywhere. These days, most guys use smaller amps and mic them if they are playing anywhere larger than a small bar anyway. If you can test one out in the store you'll know for sure if it'll go quiet enough for you.

You should spend $50 and get a setup done, keep 12s on it (9s are WAY too light to vibrate an acoustic top properly and produce the sound you'll want...I have 10s on my electric), and use it to learn how to play acoustic!

Howz it sound????

Good. Not overly loud, which is fine. It's loud enough for jam sessions with a couple of other guitars. I turned the bass all the way up and the volume all the way up and played an E, and it didn't sound farty. It's got a nice, solid bass tone. No hiss or noise.

I'm thinking about a Fender Bronco 40w around the holidays--it's a modeling amp. Basically the bass version of their Mustang line.

I stumbled upon Closing Time from Semisonic the other day while piddling around, another four chord wonder.

I'm also learning 'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life', yes, from Monty Python.
