I read the original article about her comments, and they were pretty stupid; unnecessarily stupid. Other than ratings, and the need to spur debate, I can't imagine why she'd want to even pursue the argument, regarding whether it's "about race" or not.
The whole topic of Jews and race is like judging One Hit Wonders. Technically, Judaism is a religion, not a race. But because of how the Jewish people have been castigated throughout history, Jews aren't identified as originating from a particular land or region, like Italians, or Turks, or Ukrainians. My family on one side is from Poland, the other side from Russia and Romania. So technically, I'm half-Polish. But that's because my ancestors were driven out of other places, and ended up being corralled in Poland. So subjectively, as Jews, we share the same journey, to some degree; hence Jews as a race.
But it's very ignorant and tone-deaf of Whoopi to decide that neither the Jews or the Nazis are black, so they must both be white. I think she's trying to take an event that happened a long time ago, and put it in the context of the issues of today. Anyway, I read that she apologized on-air yesterday, but apparently that wasn't good enough.
