So this is embarrassing....

I've had my washing machine since September 2024 and I've used fabric softener. Probably 85% of the time I've done a load. There's one hole for detergent on the bottom left and another hole on the top right for fabric softener. So I dump the respective liquids in each hole.

I am not joking when I say I just realized today that apparently you're supposed to hit the fabric softener button on the control panel when you use fabric softener. It dumps water into the fabric softener hole to wash it down or something. There's no button you have to hit for detergent so I just figured there wouldn't be a button for fabric softener.

Pam thought it was super funny. Apparently not hitting the button isn't a big deal. It just means that my clothes may have had spots on them. I thought it meant that there was going to be a giant dried clump of fabric softener somewhere in the machine that would fuck up my machine but that's not the case.

Anyway, did you guys know about the fabric softener button? Am I just a dumb dodo or am I right to assume that if there's no detergent button, why would there be a fabric softener button?

She could have been more supportive lol.

What’s gabric softener?
Is this the Girly Things thread?

First off, I live by myself so there's that.

Secondly, a super easy way to make your girl all hot for you is to do the laundry and besides the whole fabric softener button thing, doing laundry is pretty easy. Folding sucks, but overall it's a good way to score points with minimal effort.

Our washer doesn't have a fabric softener button. If you put it in the tray, it releases it for you. But Mrs. Scotch never uses it, because we buy the good detergent pods, and there are other reasons that only she knows. Obviously there's no "detergent" button, it's just part of the wash cycle.

Maybe try using your AI to look it up:

- is fabric softener bad for the wash?

Yes, excessive use of fabric softener can be problematic for your washing machine and clothes, potentially leading to buildup, reduced absorbency, and even mold growth.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

How Fabric Softener Affects Washing Machines:
  • Build-up and Clogs:
Fabric softeners, especially liquid ones, can leave a waxy residue that builds up in the washing machine, including the dispenser and pipes.

  • Mold and Mildew:
This residue can create an environment for mold and mildew to grow, especially in front-loading machines.

  • Reduced Efficiency:
Clogs and buildup can lead to decreased efficiency in washing and draining, potentially shortening the lifespan of your machine.

  • Stains:
    Build-up can also stain clothes.
How Fabric Softener Affects Clothes:
  • Reduced Absorbency:
Fabric softener can coat clothes, reducing their ability to absorb moisture, which is particularly problematic for towels and athletic wear.
  • Skin Irritation:
Some people may experience skin irritation from scented fabric softeners.
  • Breakdown of Fibers:
Over time, some experts believe that fabric softener can contribute to the breakdown of fibers, leading to a shorter lifespan for clothing.
  • Impact on Breathability:
Fabric softener can negatively impact the breathability of certain fabrics.

because we buy the good detergent pods

I fear we are venturing into another fancy bread type situation.

When you say good detergent pods, what exactly do you mean?

Because once I bought my own washer and dryer I started buying what I consider to be the good detergent, Tide.

Before I had my own washer and dryer, I always bought whatever the cheapest was and the commercials are actually right. Tide is clearly much thicker than the cheap stuff so I assume that means it's more detergent and less water as advertised.

Yes, we use Tide pods, the preferred brand for brain-damaged kids all over the US. I think Mrs. Scotch tried those "good for the environment" ones once, and they didn't do too well.

Good for the environment usually means either not as effective or more annoying but not always. Paper straws are the worst but bio resin G-Shock watch straps are more or less the same as the high-end straps on any other G-Shock.

Yeah with my tide liquid it tells you how far you should fill the cup but I always just fill it all the way up. Between that and the dryer sheet, which by the way, that's another new addition to my laundry routine now that I have my own machines, I like when this shit actually smells flowery when I take it out of the dryer.

and there are other reasons that only she knows.

Hahahahahahaha.

I missed that line when I read your post the first time.

Well now I need you to question her about her reasons and report back. Clearly she knows more than any of us here.

When I typed that, I was being honest about her knowing why we don't use fabric softener. But then I googled it, and came up with that whole AI explanation that I posted just below it. So those are all the reasons. It's just that I needed the AI, and she doesn't.

A friend of mine back in the day used to say "a hole is just a hole" (in other words, any girl is an viable option despite her personality). He wanted to refer to that saying in a situation where it would be inappropriate to say it so he said, "I want to say something but I can't. It's kinda like Que sera sera."

From that point on, not only did we use that phrase instead (even privately), but I can't hear that song without changing the lyric from "whatever will be will be" to "a hole is just a hole".
