So I haven't posted here in 2 1/2 years. I got tired of featuring my favorite new music that (mostly) nobody cared about. I will probably get back to putting up some new music again, but not now. BTW, as Sadchild seems to be discovering these decade-old threads for the first time, I'd highly recommend he look through this one, if he wants an idea of what's been happening in music in the 21st century.

Anywho, I thought it'd be fun to highlight bands that history has seemed to overlook. As I was putting this together, I realized I had several 90's grunge tunes, so I decided to make that the theme.

The Swedish band Salt made the Billboard charts with their album Auscultate. The song Bluster may have been their only hit, but the album is full of good tunes, including this one

Salt – Honour Me (from Auscultate)

And here's their hit from that album

Salt - Bluster

Dandelion was a high energy band from Philly, who only put out the album Dyslexicon. Weird-out was the charting hit, but here's another good one

Dandelion – Trailer Park Girl (from Dyslexicon) (Philly)

And here's the song you'll probably recognize

Dandelion – Weird-Out

Elastica from England scored several hits on their debut album, here's two of them

Elastica – Stutter

Elastica – Connection (Letterman Show)

Finally, Chicago band Veruca Salt was seen as a bit of a joke, but they put out some serious grunge, aside from their hit Seether. Here's two more from American Thighs.

Veruca Salt – Get Back

This one is long and emotional, it pays off if you hang-in there

Hey thanks for this!

Salt is right up my alley (well, something I'd like, but not fall in love with, TBH). They're like the female version of Hum "Stars" and Ammonia "Drugs" to me. Somewhere between Hole and That Dog.

I'm off and running ATM but I'll check out Dandelion. I've heard Elastica, but not in a long time, so I'll give them another go. And I've liked Veruca (casually, not an avid fan) for decades already (Seether, Rocket Girls and their much newer Laughing In The Sugar Bowl).

PS: "if he wants an idea of what's been happening in music in the 21st century" .... I didn't already?

So what do you call replicas like the little Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, or Venice?

I remember Salt, but not very well.
I don't think I've heard of Dandelion.

Jennifer Trynin was A Boston artist who released the album Cockamamie in 1994. Better Than Nothing was the big hit off that album. Listen to her guitar sound on this live performance.

She's got a nice flanger effect to fatten up the sound and give it that watery effect. I dig it.

Another one of my favorite bands that fell through the cracks in the US is the British band Elbow, led by the superlative vocals of Guy Garvey. They've had many hits in Europe, and some airplay in the US. But everyone will recognize this tune from their 2008 album The Seldom Seen Kid, as it's been used for about a dozen movies and TV shows. Here's a live version of Grounds For Divorce.

so you can play and that is really cool. i'm jealous. i think aaron can too? either way it is awesome.

what do those foot pedal things that trey uses all the time do? i somewhat understand what they do with a piano...make notes sound different. is that how he can hold one note for like 30 seconds?

The pedals on a piano are simple levers that control dampers on the strings to control reverb. The floor pedals for a guitar can do anything, they're electronic. They can change the sound, reverb, effects, anything.

Rush's Geddy Lee plays bass and keyboards. Usually he alternates, but sometimes he needs to do both, so he has foot pedals for keyboard/synth control. And he sings at the same time.

Btw, you can see Jen Trynin using the pedals in the video above.

I love that Jennifer Trynin song. Heard it on a CMJ sampler back in the 90s. Never got into any other of her songs though. I did buy her book that tells her whole story though. It was a real good read.

Those Dandelion songs are 100% Nirvana. They sound more like Nirvana than Silverchair. Didn't think that was even possible, but here it is. Not saying it's bad. But it's pure Nirvana.

Still not digging Elastica, but I can see why people dig it. Kinda like how I can't defend Liz Phair's Exile In Guyville. Despite it being genius, I totally get why most people wouldn't dig it. Ya either like it or ya don't.

Elbow is solid. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but much respect to them. Imagine Dragons must have to pay them royalties, because these guys obviously did the boom-clap-boom-clap thing first (and better).

Scotch has the foot pedals right.
For example, you can step on a button and go from a clean mellow tone to a loud distorted sound for a solo. Add delay (echo) to make it sound like there's more going on. Reverb is almost an echo, but not quite. For no reverb, stick your head in a closet that's full of coats and clothes and talk. You don't really hear anything back in your ears after you've stopped talking. For reverb, talk in a church or large room with hard walls. You hear your voice hang in the air just a little longer than your last word. Delay is like a longer version of reverb where you distinctly hear the word (or note) a second time like an echo from yelling in a canyon.

With the right foot pedals, you can sort of make one guitar sound a lot like just about any song on the radio.
