@sadchild Do you base your like of the song on the song or on the video?
Usually I base a song on if/how it moves me emotionally. 2nd most popular criteria is if/how it moves me musically (good riff, talented musicianship, catchy, intriguing sound, or any combination of these kind of things).
But yes, there have been times a music video sold me on the song. Where maybe I was lukewarm to the song at first, but the video put it into some kind of context. The song may not resonate with me until the video makes something click. Like Frightened Rabbit "Get Out", for example. I didn't get into the song until I saw the amazing video. MGMT "Your Life Is A Lie" is another example. Before seeing its video I was like "WTF?". But after seeing the wacky video, I was still going "WTF?"... but now I enjoy the WTF aspect of the whole package. Same with Die Antwoord "Baby's On Fire". The video brought me from "What is this crap?" to "I'm really digging this weird crap!".
It's not always a music video that can accomplish this though. I originally didn't care for Simple Minds "Don't You Forget About Me". But after seeing the film, well, you'll see the song come up on the 333 at some point. So music videos, films and other media definitely can help me get into a song, but it's usually not the case.
While on the subject, sometimes I like a song, and the video just makes me like it even more. Like Mother Mother "The Stand", Counting Crows "Palisades Park" and Ingrid Michaelson "Time Machine". Those videos are like adding whipped cream on the brownie.
And sometimes the opposite happens. There can be a music video I love, but it still doesn't help me like the song at all. Like most of OK Go's videos are great but I don't care for most of their music. Or David Crowder Band "SMS [Shine]", which is one of my all-time fav music vids of all ever, but the song is just okay.
