#296 Counting Crows "Einstein On The Beach"

Recorded before August And Everything After (which is a classic album IMO, a real breath of fresh air that counterbalanced all of the grunge and noise-rock of the time), this was left off because it didn't fit into the "mopey" theme. So glad it did find release on DGC Rarities Vol 1, which also had great songs from Beck, Posies, and Nirvana. I love that it was written in the middle of the night with its original demo recorded on an answering machine in a hotel room!

I haven't heard that one in a little while. It's good and should get as much play as Mr. Jones.
The answering machine story is pretty cool. It was obviously pre-pro-tools / recording studio in a laptop.
We used to record stuff on a 4-track cassette unit that was pretty "high-end" for non-professionals to have access to while playing in a basement.

I had an 8 track player & recorder when I was a kid. 8 > 4 so its better right?

I still have some 4-track cassettes in my basement, dating back to at least 2002.

I upgraded to one of these about 10 years ago.

#295 Beck "Loser"

Who knew a song about how awful you think you are at rapping, recorded in a friend-of-a-friend's kitchen, could turn out so damn cool? And, as far as I know, launch a whole new style of music too.

The beginning of a big career.

I re-skimmed your list (so far), here's a couple of notes I missed.
somewhere around the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers, MA.
Stop at Bagel World while you’re there.

#322 PM Dawn "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss"

That’s sampled from Spandau Ballet’s True. But you probably knew that.

We (thought) we were cutting edge because we had a 4-track in 1990.
I've been using Cubase for the last 6 years or so. It's amazing what you can do with a laptop these days.
If I ever figure out how to use it correctly, it could be impressive!

I never knew what it was about. Kinda cool back-story.
Beck opened for U2 a few years ago. It was great fun to hear the entire crowd singing together "I'm a loser baby so why don't you kill me"
That would have been great. In the early days Beck was known to be a bit of an a-hole. Apparently he would show up late, bring a boombox out on stage with him, sing for a few minutes and walk off the stage after a few minutes if he got bored.
#294 Danzig "Mother"

Glenn's middle finger directed right at the PMRC. Classic.

I didn't know that back-story either. He can flip off the PMRC like nobody else.

#293 Ben Folds Five "Underground"

From the first line "I was never cool in school" this song had my attention. "Hand me my nose ring! Show me the mosh pit. We can be happy underground." Apparently I'm a sucker for outcast anthems. The polar opposite of "Brick".

Also, I forgot to mention this back at #317 and #313, but BF5 and Bill Fox are two of several artists on my list I discovered thanks to my subscription to CMJ New Music Monthly back in the day (from about 1995 to 2002). I've counted over NINETY bands I like thanks to CMJ!

#290 Manu Chao & Anouk "Bongo Bong / Je Ne T'Aime Plus"

Another CMJ gem - but a really bizarre one. I'd never expect this to find mass appeal. Actually, I would guess 99% of the world doesn't care for it at all. In fact, the first time I heard it, I was like "WTF is this?!". But over time, I found myself wanting to hear it again. And again. And again. Years later, after a few listens, my wife also went from WTH?! to loving it too.

I remember pulling a Manu Chao CD off the freebie pile when I used to work for Broadcast Data Systems ( occasional freebie boxes of promo CD's were a perk ). I also remember liking it, but haven't heard it in forever. Maybe I should load it up into the ol' compooter.
