#309 Slipknot "(sic)"

I went to Locobazooka '99 in Worcester MA. There were a bunch of bands that were only somewhat-known at the time who soon got huge: Staind, Static X, System Of A Down, Coal Chamber.... and Slipknot. Slipknot's set was so intense and the crowd was pushing so hard, we were all literally at a 45 degree angle! I was leaning back (but not falling over) in a mass of sweaty humans being pushed like reeds in the wind. Then it would all shift and I'd be leaning at a 45 degree angle forward - just stacks of bodies being mashed into one another. Later I found this CD, featuring two "Rough Mixes" of "Surfacing" and "Eyeless" and was immediately hooked. When I got the full album, this opening track blew my damn head clean off my shoulders. I still think it's their best song.

I used to love packing onto the floor during concerts. Back in the 80’s, before moshing was a thing at rock shows, it would get like that. I’m trying to remember if it was Aerosmith or David Lee Roth, but one of those shows I started about 15 feet in front of the barricade in front of the guitar player and a couple of songs later I was 10 feet in front of the bass player, and my feet never touched the floor. Social distancing be damned.

That's one of those things, where the tolerance of it goes down exponentially with age.
Amen. Most of the time I'm happier if the people in front of me stay seated so that I don't have to stand the whole show.
I saw Journey a couple of years ago and the people in front of me were standing. Since I couldn't see I stood too. This dipshit and his Karen behind me were kicking my chair and complaining. It's the closest I've gotten to getting into a fight at a concert. I started nice by telling them I'd sit when the people in front of me do. It escalated quickly when they didn't think it should matter to me.
@HecticArt I have a story just like yours coming up at #237!
Sorry. I hope it was more of a teaser than a spoiler.

THIS!

Someone I work with went to see a well-known band, but he liked the opening act. He stood up during the opening act and people were harassing him non-stop. He eventually sat down. Then when the headliner went on, everybody stood up. WTF?

I rarely go to big venue shows. Even when I get free tickets, I usually end up leaving early (did that with Ozzy, Godsmack, Korn - the arena time I saw them). I didn't make it to the end. Sound sucks. Crowd sucks. View sucks. Why bother?

I love the 50/100/200/300 capacity gigs. And I find a spot about 10 'rows' back in the pit dance around, jump around, have fun (respectfully) - and don't care if people don't like it. it's a rock show, it's the pit, deal with it. I didn't come to a hard rock show to sit with my tea and crumpets and comment on whether or not their outfit clashes with their instruments, I came to ROCK OUT! Many times I've been the only person around me rocking out (respectfully), and nothing stopped me.

That being said, I'm an old-style peaceful 'slamdancer' not a 'pitter'. I don't like the circle. I don't like the elbows and shoves and colliding. I like to groove, jam, bounce, bump into other people rocking out, high five. And crowd surfing and stage diving is cool (though I've never done either). But the violent crap sucks.

#308 Skee-Lo "I Wish"

From around 1986 to 1995 is called the "Golden Age Of Hip Hop" and that's when most of my favorite rap songs were made. Give me LL, Beasties, Run DMC, Arrested Development, De La Soul... And there's a handful of one-hit wonders that are so great, like this gem. I'm a sucker for a catchy, self-deprecating song about the pains of being an uncool misfit!

I was talking to a friend a couple of weeks ago about Three Feet High & Rising.
Apparently it’s hard to find a physical copy on line. I had replaced my cassette version with a cd copy around 2000. I love that album.

Wow he's right! Lowest one on eBay right now is $17 (with shipping) with 4 bidders, but that will likely climb because the rest are crazy like $40+. On Amazon used it's $50. Had no idea! I did, however, know that there's something going on with the band and that first album. I read something a while ago they were at odds with the company that owns the rights to it.

Aah, here it is: 8 Possible Reasons Why De La Soul's Problems Are '3 Feet High And Rising'

I had to pay $16 USD to get my copy of a compilation CD which had the track Melody on it. I was unable to locate a CD copy of Melody anywhere for several years. I found it on a site called discogs.com. You may also get lucky there if you are looking for the CD. You can also get vinyl there too.

Thanks! I've been to Discogs (and I've entered some releases that were missing) but I've never bought or sold anything on there. It's good to hear it worked out for you - I'll consider it a good option now!

That sucks. I hope they get it sorted out and can start to make some of the money that they deserve.

#305 Atmosphere "Me"

On #311 I said, "This whole album is a collection of dark poetry and stories of small victories between large failures, with a few really good surprise endings, but this song is one of two that stand above the rest." Here's the other one. A broken rap star from a broken home explains his life story, then tells the girl he's flirting with...

You can try to fix my broken wings
You can know all the words to the songs I sing
But you don't need to know what's wrong with me
Unless you think you gonna come home with me

#304 Mudvayne "Not Falling"

Mudvayne's first album has a few amazing songs on it, but the rest goes too far for me in both heaviness and complexity. Kudos to them for being so technically amazing, but it almost becomes not-music to me - just noise. Their third album onward had good stuff but the singles were obviously written to be simple enough to stay on the radio (and keep them checks coming). "Not Falling", from the second album, is right in the middle. Complex, but not indigestible. Heavy, but not extreme. Talent, but not just for the sake of showing off.

#302 Fun "Some Nights"

Another one of the few songs in my top 333 that's from the last ten years (2012). This guy is the modern incarnation of the greatest rock singer to ever land on Earth... Freddie Mercury. He's got the range, he's got the power, he puts personality and character into his singing. I'm not saying he's as good as Freddie, but he's damn good and he's got all the bases covered. Lyrics are fantastic too. And the song has excellent dynamics.
