Sadchild's "high fives" (every artist I like at least five songs from)

abc-1100.jpg

ABC

Genre: synth pop/new wave

Discovered: Probably MTV?

Other: I used to enjoy the uncensored version of "A To Z" featuring the female member Eden saying, "Hi. I'm Eden. And I want you to kiss my snatch." But recently I read it was actually Martin Fry saying it through a vocal effects processor. And now I'm suddenly not so into it anymore.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Be Near Me
2. Viva Love
3. How To Be A Millionaire
4. Poison Arrow
5. The Look Of Love

AC/DC

Genre: THE official measuring stick and litmus test of 'hard rock' from which all other rock songs are judged to determine their genre.

Discovered: Uh.. probably a friend?

Other: They released a single last year. I'd swear they recorded it in 1980. Perhaps the only rock band that's never really changed their sound for five decades, and it still works.

HIGH FIVE:

1. You Shook Me All Night Long
2. Have A Drink On Me
3. Shoot To Thrill
4. Big Gun
5. Jailbreak

I didn't know Viva Love. The others are great.

"Viva Love" is from Lexicon Of Love 2, released about five years ago. The only other song on there I liked was "The Flames Of Desire" (and it took a few listens to grow to like it). There are earlier versions of "Viva" that aren't so good, the version on LOL2 is fantastic.

Aceyalone

Genre: hip hop

Discovered: CMJ.

Other: Aside from the song on my CMJ CD from 20 years ago (#3 below), I only have his 2013 album Leanin' On Slick. I like how organic it sounds. It's more like he's got a backing band than just rapping over samples put out from a computer. I don't know much else from him though.

HIGH FIVE:

1. I Can Get It Myself
2. Leanin' On Slick
3. Rappers, Rappers, Rappers
4. 30 And Up
5. One Cup, Two Cup

Adam Ezra Group

Genre: roots rock, singer-songwriter

Discovered: Caught them at a downtown festival in Concord NH the day before my son was born.

Other: The artist I've seen the most time live (partly because they're local, but also because they're fantastic).

HIGH FIVE:

1. She's Just A Girl
2. Fairytales
3. Dumb Love Song
4. Katie
5. California

My #1 isn't on YouTube (that one entire album is missing). The song can be heard here instead:

The Mrs. asked about it when it played. I got credit for mentioning TCQ, it drifted into a conversation about Ashley's Roach Clip.
It's how I compensate for not being able to carry on a conversation about sports-ball.

Adam Sandler

Genre: comedy

Discovered: A friend played "Lunchlady Land" for me.

Other: He went to Manchester Central High School. One of my apartments in the early 90s was about 6 inches away from that school. Another NH comedian is Sarah Silverman. My son did a couple summer camps at the high school she graduated from.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Lunchlady Land
2. At A Medium Pace
3. Ode To My Car
4. Steve Polychronopolous
5. The Lonesome Kicker

Also, Seth Myers lived in Bedford NH.

Aerosmith

Genre: rock, hard rock

Discovered: Probably my cousins.

Other: My band once played on a college building balcony. We were two stories up and the crowd was on the grass below. The last band to do that same thing there was Aerosmith. And I insist that somehow someway that makes me like really cool or something.

Mar 8, 2013 at 11:31am
Our dates for Quad Stock are May 3rd (Friday), and May 10th (Friday) for a make up day. This year the event will be outside and the band will perform on our balcony above one of our dorms. The last band to perform there was Aerosmith. How much would A Simple Complex charge for an hour?

HIGH FIVE:

1. Dream On
2. Dude (Looks Like a Lady)
3. Janie's Got A Gun
4. Walk This Way
5. Sweet Emotion

Aesop Rock

Genre: hip hop

Other: Good storyteller. #1 below has a childhood story about each of his brothers. #2 is about a trip to a psychiatrist.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Blood Sandwich
2. Shrunk
3. Rings
4. Dorks
5. Klutz

Alice Cooper

Genre: rock

Discovered: A K-Tel record (or similar).

Other: I had "I Never Cry" on one of those late 70s/early 80s K-Tel (style) records. His green face (from the Goes To Hell album) scared me a bit as a kid. It wasn't until after "Poison" was big in 1989 that a friend introduced me to the full Goes To Hell album, and that's where the other four songs on my list come from. My son likes "Give The Kid A Break" (the one where it's Alice vs the devil in a courtroom).

HIGH FIVE:

1. I Never Cry
2. Guilty
3. Going Home
4. Poison
5. Go To Hell

alice-in-chains-750x420.jpg

Alice In Chains

Genre: heavy rock/radio metal

Discovered: Friend had the "Man In The Box" cassingle, flipside had clips of "Sea Of Sorrow", "Bleed The Freak" & "Sunshine".

Other: Pretty much lost me at Jar Of Flies (until they re-formed with William DuVall years later). But they were a big part of a massive shift in rock that happened in the early 90s with RHCP, Faith No More, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and more.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Would?
2. Them Bones
3. Man In The Box
4. We Die Young
5. Dam That River

I knew Alice Cooper first for all the rock songs, then one day I hear he had all those ballads. I'm like what!? But I like them.

ALL

Genre: punk rock

Discovered: MTV (saw one video one time).

Other: Probably the only punk rock band I like more than a handful of their songs (because I'd say they're more rock than punk). I own four of their albums and like every song. The songs listed below are much more rock than punk. For their more punk sound, search "Greedy", "Politics" or "Uncle Critic".

HIGH FIVE:

1. Million Bucks
2. Guilty
3. World's On Heroin
4. Birthday IOU
5. Better Than That

HIGH FIVE:

1. Slow It Down
2. Dream On
3. Mr Rock And Roll
4. Automatic
5. This Is The Life

Angeldust / Criss Angel

Genre: electronic rock

Discovered: Was already a fan of Klayton (sole member of Celldweller and Circle Of Dust), who was half of the project.

Other: Yep the "Mindfreak" magician. This project provides his soundtrack. Originally named Angeldust (Criss ANGEL + Circle Of DUST), the project was later renamed Criss Angel (after a falling out.... but later there was a reuniting). I bought 2 autographed CDs of their first release (as Angeldust) and sold one of them years later for $100.

HIGH FIVE:

1. DAM
2. Down
3. Darkest Day
4. Hate Me
5. Come Alive
