30 Seconds To Mars

Genre: rock

Discovered: Don't remember, but it was the first two tracks of their first album that were my first exposure (#4 & #5 below).

Other: Yet another band I'm not a big fan of, but they've got a handful of good songs. The documentary about their struggle with their record label Artifact is really good.

HIGH FIVE:

1. The Kill
2. From Yesterday
3. I'll Attack
4. Capricorn
5. Edge Of The Earth

311-band.png

311

Genre: alt-rock, ska-rock

Discovered: "Down" on the radio.

Other: Their breakthrough song, and probably still their biggest (aside from their Cure cover), is "Down". I didn't like it then, and still don't like it now. Their next single "All Mixed Up" was pretty big too, but I don't care for that one either. I started liking their stuff two albums after the one with "Down" and "Mixed". Oh, and this is an interesting story:

HIGH FIVE:

1. Don't Tread On Me
2. Come Original
3. You Wouldn't Believe
4. Lovesong
5. Rolling Through

38 Special

Genre: southern rock

Discovered: Not sure. Probably MTV or FM?

Other: Interesting bit o' trivia: “Second Chance”, their highest-charting hit, was written five years before it was released, and became a top 10 hit almost a full year after Rock & Roll Strategy had come out (the two previous singles didn't do well).

HIGH FIVE:

1. If I'd Been The One
2. Hold On Loosely
3. Back Where You Belong
4. Caught Up In You
5. Second Chance

454 Big Block

Genre: hardcore metal

Discovered: one of several bands I got into from the low-priced Identity samplers from Century Media Records in the '90s.

Other: I could write 10 paragraphs of gripping history just about the frontman. His mother OD'd when he was an infant, in and out of foster homes and juvie, big member of the FSU gang (@scotchandcigar may remember hearing about FSU - aka Fuck Shit Up - in Boston back in the 90s), mosh pits known for intense violence, a year in prison for repeated beatings and extortion of a guy who was once in a white-power rock band.

"My foster dad was a minister, but he was a drug addict and extremely abusive. I grew up getting the shit kicked out of me every day, and watching my foster mother get the shit kicked out of her. I saw both her arms get broken, her nose get broken. I’d be getting the shit kicked out of me by this huge, obese guy – he was like 350 pounds – he was this monster, and I was just a small child only eight or nine years old, and there was nothing she could do. She was a victim herself; she was caught up in her own demons, and she couldn’t protect me or the other children that lived with us. I was crying myself to sleep every night, and she would try to do what she could – she’d tell me she wouldn’t let it happen again, she wouldn’t let it happen again, and that she was gonna save me and get us out of the situation. And the next day, we’d be back to square one, she couldn’t do anything."

HIGH FIVE:

1. Born Human
2. My Father's Eyes
3. Your Jesus
4. Department Of Youth Services
5. Lamb

8Stops7

Genre: rock

Discovered: Subscription to CMJ New Music Monthly from 1995-2003.

Other: One of many bands that got the shaft when AOL and Time Warner merged (aka 'the biggest mistake in corporate history'). The sole criterion used to determined which bands to keep or drop was whether or not a band’s current album had sold a million copies or not. A few other casualties: Poe, Orgy, Cowboy Mouth, 40 Below Summer and Wilco.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Question Everything
2. Better
3. Uninspired
4. Regression
5. My Would-Be Savior

Vocalist Evan Sula-Goff explained the meaning of the band's name as, "Basically, seven is a symbol of something you want to get away from, and eight is the door you go through to get there."

Yeah I don't get it either.

I didn't know that had happened. What a clumsy way to manage.....well.....anything.

We still play Cowboy Mouth.
A Perfect Circle
I dig A Perfect Circle. I saw them back in 2001.
Their guitar player is a trip. He doesn't really 'do scales' and plays more emotively. No freaking clue how he makes it sound so good.
