Getaway People

Genre: pop rock

Discovered: CMJ

Other: Pop rock with a laid backl danceable groove and alt-pop vibe. Was always surprised they didn't have bigger success. #1 below was the theme song to Young Americans (a Dawson's Creek spin-off). The top 3 below were all featured in episodes of Malcolm In The Middle.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Six Pacs
2. She Gave Me Love
3. Good Life
4. There She Goes
5. Deceived By An Angel

Ghost

Genre: heavy rock, goth rock, radio metal

Discovered: SXM

Other: One of the biggest new heavy bands out there right now. Before Covid they were performing in 5000, 6000, 7000 seat venues (which, for a new metal group is massive). Today's equivalent of Alice Cooper (School's Out era....I'm guessing on this one), Motley Crue (Shout At The Devil era), Marilyn Manson (Smells Like Children era), etc.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Cirice
2. From The Pinnacle To The Pit
3. Square Hammer
4. Rats
5. Faith

Gin Blossoms

Genre: rock and roll

Discovered: MTV "Hey Jealousy"

Other: Most of their success was from songs written by the guy they had to kick out due to alcoholism. That guy later killed himself. Sad story, but great music.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Allison Road
2. Mrs Rita
3. Hey Jealousy
4. Lost Horizons
5. Found Out About You

Yeah, it’s too bad they haven’t been more successful over the long term. They do good, solid rock and roll. I think their sound doesn’t really age, so it would be great to hear new stuff from them on the radio again.

Sadly the guy that wrote their good songs off'ed himself. So unless lightning strikes twice, I think they're destined to remain a nostalgia act :/

Godsmack

Genre: heavy rock, post-grunge

Discovered: FM "Whatever"

Other: I remember when Rocko broke Godsmack on WAAF. And I work with one of Sully's ex-girlfriends. She believes some of the early songs yelling about "go away, get off my back bitch" etc are likely at least somewhat inspired by her. A previous singer for my band had a back stage pass for Godsmack so I gave him two things: a letter from this girl and one of our CDs. He gave him the letter, not the CD. And that pretty much sums up how much help I was getting from the band at the time. "I've busted my ass and done 99 things to make something good happen for us, just do this last piece and we're golden!" "Duh I forgot."

HIGH FIVE:

1. Greed
2. Whatever
3. The Enemy
4. I Stand Alone
5. Keep Away

Gorillaz

Genre: alternative, alt pop, trip hop

Discovered: cousin asked me to find a song he heard on the radio, it was "Clint Eastwood"

Other: They've got 8 songs I like, but anything else I've heard from them is just too odd for me to get into.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Clint Eastwood (with Del Tha Funkee Homosapien)
2. Feel Good Inc (with De La Soul)
3. The Valley Of The Pagans (with Beck)
4. Tomorrow Comes Today
5. Strange Times (with Robert Smith)

grandson

Genre: alt rock, trap rock, dark EDM

Discovered: somewhere on the internet (a music chart? a YouTube suggestion?) "Apologize"

Other: Apocalyptic goth dance floor grooves. Perfect for a twisted sci-fi movie club scene (or chase scene).

HIGH FIVE:

1. Stigmata
2. oh no!!!
3. Happy Pill
4. Rock Bottom
5. Riptide

I've only heard what they play on SXM, but from your description and the video that you've posted, I need to check out more. I like everything I've heard so far.

Grinspoon

Genre: alt rock, post-grunge

Discovered: don't remember, but it was "Postenebriatedanxiety"

Other: Grunge thunder from down under.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Postenebriatedanxiety
2. Black Friday
3. Black Tattoo
4. Dead Cat x 3
5. Business = Pleasure

Guns-N-Roses-GettyImages-1201731181.jpg

Guns N Roses

Genre: hard rock

Discovered: first exposure was a movie trailer in 1987 with "Welcome To The Jungle" in it, but didn't know who it was. didn't really get into them until '89.

Other: Appetite is 90% of the GNR I like the most. The way cancel culture is these days, I can't believe people aren't throwing Axl under the bus for the N-word in "One In A Million" on Lies. It wasn't even metaphorical like Mellencamp or Lennon, or calling white people that word like the dude from Flaw. It's just pure unabashed, unabated racism. It also uses the F-word (for gay) and bashes immigrants hard.

HIGH FIVE:

1. You Could Be Mine
2. Sweet Child O' Mine
3. Out Ta Get Me
4. My Michelle
5. Rocket Queen

:\m/\m/:

After high school, I moved out of my mom's house because I had a big fight with her boyfriend over cat food.
I moved in with my brother. I had set up the basement as my "music studio" with my amps, drum machine, keyboard and whatnot.
It was 1987 or 1988 and I set out to learn Sweet Child of Mine. I played that damned riff literally for hours trying to get it right.
I'm surprised that my sister-in-law didn't kill me. I didn't realize how much the sound carried through the house.
No jury would have convicted her.

Gus Black

Genre: rock and roll, alt rock, AAA

Discovered: CMJ "Floodlights"

Other: Surprised he didn't have more success. Though he never really chose a genre. Started out half singer-songwriter half rocker. Then went AAA. Then went alt-rock. Then went kinda dark folk. His first two albums aren't on Youtube (officially, there are scattered random songs up there from fans). Probably because the label went out of business years ago.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Laugh I Could Learn To Love (AAA)
2. New Mexican Birdy (alt rock)
3. Dog (singer-songwriter)
4. Out Of Tune (alt rock)
5. Floodlights (AAA)

Guster

Genre: alt rock, indie rock

Discovered: CMJ "Airport Song", same disc I discovered Getaway People (above), Pure ("songs you forgot about" thread) and Ultraspank (I'll get to them eventually) from.

Other: My wife is a fan too. For my first 15 anniversaries, I followed the 'gift by year' list (1 = paper, 2 = cotton, etc). For our first anniversary, the paper gift was tickets to Guster. Great show.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Airport Song
2. Barrel Of A Gun
3. Either Way
4. Center Of Attention
5. Fa Fa
