We've both used many words and made many analogies, but it comes down to separating personal taste from disparagement. I would never say that Hall & Oates or Metallica are talentless, or that their fans are nuts, or question the ability of others to listen to them.

Or going a step further (as you've done), said things like "only a few of the garage bands I've ever come across are worse than The Doors", or "I don't think the band was even popular until the movie came out". Or this recent comment, "AIC/STP had great music and were each fronted by people who became drug-addled drunks, while The Doors had terrible music and was fronted by a drug-addled drunk". See the difference? When you hate the band, the frontman was always a mess; but when you like the band, the frontmen became a mess. Or this comment "I've seen nothing great about Morrison as a frontman. I've seen one and he sucked." That's like the guy who says "I went outside today, and it wasn't that hot. Therefore, global warming is bullshit".

Remember there was a guy who ran for president, and if you agreed with him, he thought you were a "great guy"? But if you disagreed with him, even if you were someone as honorable as John McCain, you were just "a guy who got captured - I like people who weren't captured. And he graduated last in his class". Don't be like that guy.

I'm doing my best to keep this entertaining and light; no nastiness intended. Because frankly, I don't know how the hell I became the standard-bearer for the legacy of The Doors. There are at least 500 bands I'd take a bullet (with butterfly wings) for before them.

I've just run out of ways to say that personally disliking a band has no effect on history or reality. Just like how my lack of enthusiasm for Bob Dylan doesn't affect his global legacy.

It was a joke meaning, don't compare someone to that politician. (Or really any politician for that matter.)

As for the Doors, it is what it is. We all have stuff that we love and hate that doesn't match up with what the masses like,
I know that I have a lot of stuff everyone else hates.

There are people here who actively dislike the Beatles, Dave Matthews Band, Chicago, Foo Fighters, B-52's, Radiohead, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, as well as The Doors. None of that bothers me in the least. I'll even allow people to hate Morrissey.

@scotchandcigar I don't particularly agree with the comparisons and explanations you made in your most recent post, especially thaose second and third paragraphs. That's way out there. The message I get is "if a lot of people say someone's talented, they are, so don't say they suck". And I can't get behind that. Frankly I think a lot of Dolly Parton's songs suck, but she ain't without talent. And I could say that about a hundred artists. But when it comes to The Doors, I see no positives. Period. I'm sorry if it (seems to) offend you if I think they suck. It mystifies me how anyone can enjoy their music. But that's how it is. Not sure why you feel the need to defend them aside from "I can't stand The Doors" / "And I can't believe you can't stand them!" There's no amount of explaining that's gonna make a person who hates the taste of bacon like bacon (unless they just give up and go with the mainstream pretending they like it so they can fit in). Everything from the lyrics, to melodies, to that god awful keyboard, A to Z, I hate it all. And being told that this means I'm like Trump ain't gonna change it. To steal a cliché you've used in the past - agree to disagree. And if next week, a new user signs up and posts "Hey! Who here likes The Doors?" my response will be "Not me. I think they're the worst successful band in rock history."

Paragraph 2 is a repost of your own statements, wherein your comments on the band go beyond simply "I think they suck".

I've said about a dozen times (go look) that I don't care what you think of any particular band's music. It's the distortion of their fame and disparagement of their fans that I don't understand. My paragraph 3 attempts to summarize that. I thought it honed-in on the issue in a precise way, but it wasn't meant to offend. So if you think I was implying something nasty, I was not, but I apologize if that was how it went over.

I wasn't offended (thanks for offering the apology though, appreciated!) but I just thought it was one of those "I'll make an impact by using the biggest slam I can find". Like those people who say "Biden is just like Hitler" and so on. And "you think this, therefore you must think THAT!" which I didn't feel was accurate. But it's the nature of debate, so I get it.

To be clear, I don't mean to disparage fans of The Doors at all. I'm simply saying I don't get it. I don't remember saying "Doors fans are stupid" or anything similar (if I did, I apologize!) And I'm not trying to distort their fame (hence "worst SUCCESSFUL band" and "Pioneers? Yes!") But I only know what I know about them. I don't go looking for info on them. And of course, honestly, I'm sure I'm more likely to remember things about them that back up how I feel about them. Human nature, I suppose. How many democrats remember (or are willing to admit to) the good things Trump did?
