I sold couple and gave the rest to my brother-in-law.

I was looking in the past pages for some of my old watch pics. I guess, I uploaded them to a website and never kept the images. Next time when I'm at my brother-in-law house I will try and take a photo of my old collection.

I got it. It's pretty nice! Great weight and size. A white face would have been a little better, but I'm digging it.
Now I can land my airplane in a crosswind.
 
In January 2018 this watch started it all. And I kinda credit the posts of Wolf and Scotch I read for getting me to get my first real watch.

Well I gave this one to Laura a few days ago and she wanted it with a black strap so I got her that too. It's a small men's (by today's standards, not our father's) automatic watch at 38mm diameter and 18mm lug to lug so it fits well on a woman. And I mean come on...can I really be with a woman who doesn't have at least 1 automatic watch? That would be a stretch.

And here is what she sent me today and it made me smile:



Looks good on her. And while she may not appreciate the finer details of an automatic field watch she thinks it looks good so that's enough for me.

Oh and before you all go on with wild speculation, she's a kindergarten teacher and thus the playground. Also we had a cute little exchange yesterday where I went to Publix (and didn't fall in a canal) and she wouldn't tell me what she wanted so I had to guess and got her some girly yogurts for lunch at work.

Also they keep shit time. Even the best Rolex or Omega or Patek are +/- 5 seconds per day whereas your average Walmart quartz is +/- 15 a month.

You all know my heart belongs to Casio but man, comments like that still hurt me to the core.

Super fancy Casio squares may be my passion (and imo the best overall watches on the market) but there is no denying the intricate, non electric, functionality of an automatic.

It was a serious question. For me watches I have had are either battery operated or you wound them up. Automatic implies a third mechanism.

Oh, you really weren't fucking around?

Automatics are watches you wind (they can also be self winding with a rotor powered by wrist movement)...the winding tightens a spring that then slowly releases its wind to move gears to power the watch. They can only keep a wind for like 40-60 hours or so with no winding or movement on the wrist to keep them going and they don't keep great time as a result but they don't rely on any sort of outside power source.

Quartz (witch I think were invented in the early 70's) rely on a battery (electric source) to oscillate a tiny quartz crystal inside the watch. The amount of vibrations the battery forces the crystal to make can be measured and thus keep very accurate time. Once that process is figured out it's WAY EASIER to mass produce than all the gears and springs that power an automatic.

Now of course there are exceptions to each. There are many examples of affordable and pricy versions of each.

I still think you may be fucking with me. I think we've had fights about this in this thread before.

So a windup watch is an automatic watch? I thought that would be manual.

I am not fucking with you. I think we fought about why you need all these other watches when an Apple watch does everything you need or something like that. Thanx for explaining the terminology.

Fair enough. Yes, a wind up watch, hand winding or self winding with a rotor = automatic.

Now we can have a whole different fight about smartwatches. They are not auto or quartz. They are mini computers on the wrist. Like the Garmin I wear when I go walking. It has no quartz crystal in it. Those certainly have their place but are in a different category.

I thought you were fucking around too. But Koop is confusing the situation.

A mechanical watch uses a mainspring and pendulum to move the hands. The equivalent on a battery powered watch is an electric circuit and a quartz crystal.

A hand-wind watch requires you to manually wind the mainspring by turning the crown a bunch of times. An automatic watch has a rotor (a half-disc looking metal weight) which spins when the watch is turned left and right, and winds the mainspring.

Unless you keep it on a winder, an automatic watch will be stopped when you put it on. But with a few twists of your wrist, it starts up. And then normal motion keeps it going. It will keep running overnight or for a day if you take it off. So if you wear it often enough, it will run continuously.

I have a bunch of them, and none of them need batteries, ever. At the same time, I have a couple of nice watches I'd like to wear now, but they have dead batteries. While automatic watches are less accurate, everyone has a cell phone anyway, so I don't think that's important.
 
In couple of weeks, I'll have a new watch. I'll be updating my Apple Watch Series 5 to the new Apple Watch Ultra.
