Pardon me, but do you have the time?

When going to Disney the watch I reach for first is my half metal Square. The resin strap makes adjustments easy when my wrist expands/contracts in the heat of the parks and it's easier and more precise to have a digital stopwatch as opposed to the bezel on my Seiko SKX. I like timing how long I wait in lines to see if it matches what the posted wait times say. This time every posted wait time was almost exactly how long the line actually wound up being. I also like to time how long it takes me to get to Disney and back home, and that is multiple hours, something that an hour long bezel can't do.

On top of that I also time ride times, from when I sit down in the ride vehicle to when the car doors open at the end of the ride. Most good dark rides are at least 5 minutes. Some rides, like Kilimanjaro Safari can vary wildly depending on if animals hold up the cars but usually that's a long one, like 20 mins. Others, like Rockin Roller Coaster are only about 90 seconds. Anyway, it's fun to me to time all that stuff.

This is one of the half metal Squares I modded. The positive display came with a black metal bezel but I switched it out so now I have this silver positive Square and then I have a fully blacked out one with a negative display and black bezel.

One can never go wrong with a Square.

Speaking of Squares, check out this new full metal burgundy Square:

It's darker red in videos. It's been deemed the G-Shock wineo by my favorite watch Youtuber, hah. No way I'm paying $600 for that thing but slap a black resin strap on it and make it the half-metal wineo and I'll gladly fork over the $400 most half-metals go for these days.

Today is my other Shinola.

I am somewhat close to making a very bad decision and buying one of my 2 grail watches:

And that's the cheaper one at a measly 1.5k. The other one is the Grand Seiko Sport high accuracy quartz, SBGV245:

Some quick thoughts:

- My biggest watch purchase in my lifetime was for that amount. In my case, it was a big deal.
- The Casio square doesn't look like an expensive watch, no matter what you pay for it.
- Grand Seiko's are nice (although I probably wouldn't spend the money for one), but not a quartz one.

I've been looking at that Grand Seiko for over a year now. I'm not going to buy it. There is no way I can justify buying a watch that is 1k less than what I paid for my car. I like the quartz. The Square (and other Casios) cheat with bluetooth and Multiband 6 to get perfect time. It's cool to have those features but the watch by itself is still a normal quartz at +/- 15 seconds per month. That Grand Seiko is +/- 10 seconds per YEAR!!! w/o any gimmicks to cheat. Grand Seiko grows their own quartz crystals to make that happen. That is really cool to me. Plus it's gorgeous.

One of the big draws of that titanium Square to me is exactly that, it doesn't look like an expensive watch. It looks like a normal Square. They make titanium ones with fancy patterns on the bezel and bracelet but I don't like them. I like the idea that only people in the know, know. It's the stealth wealth model.

And getting that Square would be a huge deal for me. I'm probably not going to do it, it's just too much, but I've had my eye on it ever since it was released.

I'm with Scotch on this.

The only plus side of buying the square is that if you get robbed, the thief isn't going to take it.

When I bought my nice Shinola, I bought it as a reward to myself for for quitting a job that I was very unhappy at, and starting a new job that still paid about the same.

I had enough in savings that I wouldn't be strapped if my car died, furnace needed to be replaced, or worried about other unexpected expenses.

Even then, I paid a little less than $1k.

So to sum it up, don't be stupid........
Wait till you get back to work full time with the benefits and whatnot. Before the COVID thing hit, it sounded like you were doing well and on your way to managing other employees. That seems like the point where it makes sense to reward yourself with a splurge.

Just my guess, but the number of people "in the know" about nice wristwatches in general - like Rolex, Omega, TAG Heuer, Patek Phillipe etc. - is like 1% of the population. The number of people who know about stealthy Casio squares is probably 1% of those people. So you'd only be buying it for yourself.

So you'd only be buying it for yourself.

Yea, that's kinda the whole point. I don't care if other people notice it, in fact I get a kick out of how if someone notices it and has a slight knowledge of Casio, they may think it's a $40 watch. Me knowing the truth is what's satisfying. And I simply love the Casio Squares.

1.5k is a ton of money, especially for a dumb watch, but it's not like my savings would be at 0 or I'd miss any bills if I bought it.

This is a very strong point.

Hopefully it comes across more as supportive friendly advice than pushy rudeness.

I remind myself not to be stupid regularly.

I've been a watch dork for 3 years now. I have Scotch and Wolf to blame for getting me addicted. Really though thanks guys, you got me into a hobby that I love.

Here is my first watch. It's going for $122 now but back in 2018 I only paid $64 for it. And it's still going strong.

My second watch was the Casio Protrek. After that I was more or less set in my ways. I'm a Seiko automatic guy and a Casio quartz guy. The Japanese know how to build a quality timepiece. I got this one in March 2018 and I'm wearing it right now.

I'm over getting the titanium square for the time being. It's just too expensive. I have 6 full or half metal squares at the moment and that will suffice. And while they are not titanium, they are certainly not cheap, at around 3.5 to 5 hundo depending on the model. During this last Disney trip I broke out the half metal blue Square. I don't give that model enough love and the blue stainless really pops in natural light.

Since I'm not going to spend 2 months rent on a titanium square, I'm now thinking of treating myself to the blue bezel Protrek. It's only $175, a much more manageable price. I like how the Protreks have such a big display, making them super easy to read. Plus having the ABC features and Multiband 6 is cool. I really only use the barometer and MB6, but I love seeing the pressure trends to try to predict the weather and also knowing that the time is perfect.

And even with the metal bezel, caseback, pushers and clasp these only weigh about 68 grams. That makes them even lighter than my all carbon Gravitymaster. Plus they have these wings on the underside that really help form the watch to the wrist. And the strap tapers to what I think is 20mm which is nice.

BTW/this is my favorite watch channel. Random Rob looks at everything from the $40 Squares to the 4k Seamasters.
