That one's awesome. And yes, it also breaks the plane but Hamilton does it right with the semi skeletonized hands so you can see the hour marker. That, plus the big day at 12 and the applied indices, man, I really do like that watch.

It's all Scotch's fault. Wolf also had something to do with it too if I remember correctly. They pointed me in the direction of automatics and then I got that $60 Seiko 5 auto field watch and now I dream of 2.5 thousand dollar Grand Seiko Quartz watches.

Watches are cool.

The gf pointed out to me that watches are accessories.

She said it's weird how I don't really care about clothes but I'm all about watches.

That made some sense.

Not that I'm going to do anything about it, but it made sense.

I didn't contribute to the thread the first few years, as I hadn't yet found the Studio Lounge. I didn't realize Aaron started it. I just know that Limegrass had some primo timepieces, while Memebag was spinning the vortex by declaring that nobody needs a watch.

It's actually Mrs Scotch's fault. We went to a jewelry store so I could get a Tag Heuer F1 (their low-end quartz watch), and she convinced me to buy the Aquaracer auto (about twice the price). That's what got me started.

Of course, she did it because she wanted an expensive necklace for herself.

Funny how that works.

We were in Detroit a bit over a year ago to visit some of the Mrs' relatives that were in town. She had mentioned the Shinola store so I said ".....I suppose we might have enough time to stop in......" I had been looking at a couple of their watches for a while, so rather than give her enough time to try to talk me out of it, I did my own shopping while she was doing hers. I think I won.
This was the one I brought home.

I'll be sporting my Seiko SKX009 Diver this week.

Man I forgot how much I love this thing. It could be improved with a hacking movement, sapphire and a ceramic bezel insert but it's still really cool and I haven't worn it in forever. I love the SKX case shape. It fits like a glove. That's why I want to buy that Islander, it's an homage to the SKX that has now been discontinued.

On top of that, the specs are pretty much perfect for my wrist.
  • Diameter: 42 mm.
  • Thickness: 13 mm.
  • Lug to Lug: 46 mm.
  • Lug Width: 22 mm.

For us watch nerds, a 2018 movie called Radium Girls just hit Netflix. I haven't seen it yet but it's definitely on my list.

I imagine you all know the story but just in case here's a quick synopsis:

These women used to paint radium on watches as lume. They would lick the brushes to form a point so they could be precise. Of course as a result, they all started getting sick.

The movie is about a whistleblower in the industry.



I wish I could get a radium lumed watch. The closest we have today is tritium and those tiny little tubes aren't dangerous at all. The fact that they are technically radioactive is still pretty cool though.

It's hard to imagine a time when people were so ignorant, they would lick radium and not think it was bad.
