Tonight in game 1, Addison Barger hit the first pinch-hit grand-slam home run in World Series history. It was one of three home runs hit by the Blue Jays. With two out in the ninth inning and the Blue Jays leading the Dodgers 11 to 4, Ohtani walked – and then Mookie Betts struck out to end the game. Game 2 is October 25 in Toronto.

There has to be one of those useless stats about first series game 7 run wins.
Baseball is defined really as a collection of useless stats. So I am sure there is. Another useless stat: 6 of the last 7 World Series Game 1 winners have won the series.

The Blue Jays scored nine runs in the sixth inning. The record for most runs scored in one inning of a World Series game is 10. The Philadelphia Athletics overcame an 8-0 deficit in game 4 of the 1929 World Series against the Cubs by scoring 10 runs in the seventh inning. The Athletics won that game 10-8 and won the Series in five games. It's the biggest comeback win in World Series history. The Tigers scored 10 runs (including a grand slam from Jim Northrup) in the third inning of game 6 of the 1968 World Series against the Cardinals, won that game 13-1 and won the Series in seven games.

How many of those game 1 winners were played on a Friday night with home field advantage with a pitcher named Trey?

6 of the last 7? If you go back farther does that mean that 7 of the last 13 first game winners didn't win the series?

One hundred fifteen World Series have been played as a best-of-seven series. (This year is the 116th.) Seventy-four of those Series (64%) were won by the team that won the first game. The first: the New York Giants over the Philadelphia Athletics in 1905. The most recent: the Dodgers over the Yankees in 2024.

I will need to search deeper but this stat is not yet available to the public.

From an announcer. I went back and looked from 2000 onwards (98 did a more comprehensive stat above). The only years the first game winner has lost:
  • 2022: Lost in 6
  • 2017: Lost in 7
  • 2016: Lost in 7
  • 2009: Lost in 6
  • 2002: Lost in 7

Last night's game was the first. There have been only two other MLB pitchers named Trey and neither has appeared in a World Series:

Trey Hodges, Braves (2002-03)
Trey Wingenter, Padres (2018-19), Tigers (2023), Red Sox, Cubs (2024)

On July 21, 2025, the Giants signed right-handed pitcher Trey Seeley. He plays with the Arizona Complex League Giants, the Giants' rookie league affiliate in Scottsdale.

Should add that the Jays won their 2 world series each in 6 games. They lost the first game in 1992 and won the first game in 1993. They started in the road in 1992 and at home in 1993.

As Guerrero came to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning of World Series game 2, play-by-play announcer Joe Buck informed us, "After the game, the post-game show." Uh, yeah, when else would the post-game show be?

Dodgers beat Blue Jays, 5 to 1. Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched a complete game, gave up no walks, struck out eight and retired the last 20 batters he faced. Wooh! Game 3 will be October 27 in Los Angeles.

So how many teams have won the series after winning the first game and losing the second?
Let's base it on the last 11 world series.....
