Do we really have to get back into this? I've made my case multiple times about how the Arab Spring would have never happened w/o Twitter and when a service has that much power it is no longer a simple entertainment entity and more of a utility.
I can go deeper than 1 sentence but come on, we're both repeating ourselves at this point. I just posted the link cause I thought it was cool a Justice was more or less making the point I've talked about here.

IDK, all this censoring of crazy talk doesn't sit right with me. It's basically some company saying that we aren't smart enough to realize bullshit when we see it. Yea, I get that some people are susceptible to internet craziness but I think most people who grew up in the internet age know that half the crap posted is likely made up by some rando.
I get it with threats and the like...stuff that is actually illegal, but if someone wants to think the Earth is flat or that Covid was China trying to attack the western world let them think it. The rest of us will just know that their opinions are stupid and no one should listen to anything they say.

The sad truth is that there are lots of people that stupid to believe everything they read on the internet. They aren't like the rest of us who only believe what we read on DRC.

Name me any other form of media that doesn't do the same thing.
Books. You can read books with all sorts of crazy conspiracy theories. Same goes for Podcasts. Radio too, look at Coast to Coast AM.
There's tons of media that airs conspiracy theories.

Twitter is not in the same category as TV or newspapers. TV and newspapers have the pretext of information. Twitter is just jibber-jabber and is mainly full of twits.
There are newspapers that print completely wacky conspiracy theories. I can't think of their names right now but the ones you can buy at the grocery store checkout line that say Bill Clinton is an alien or stuff like that.

One of the differences is that people are presenting this BS as if it were fact, and it's causing stupid people to ACT on what they are reading.
When the line is blurred this much, I think that there is moral and ethical responsibility to not actively contribute to the problem.
From a marketing perspective, if they become known for being a place that's full of misinformation, they will soon become a Yahoo Answers or MySpace. (I hear that Tom is a lonely guy.)

Yes, like the Enquirer or the Weekly World News. It's called satire.

Here's the bottom line: Facebook is a closed group, run by a private company, which people choose to opt into. They can run it however they want. They're not the government, and they don't fall under the Constitution. That's it.
Advertiser revenue will crash if they don't make some sort of a feeble effort to pretend they are trying to cull their platform of the BS.

I'm not about to drop Facebook (it's a fairly innocuous platform for me), but I've just been baffled by the number of idiotic posts I've come across lately, even including the participation of my friends. I keep seeing these questions posed by all sorts of sites - radio stations, authors, recipe forums, humor forums - about the most pointless things: Do you remember your 5th grade teacher's name; what kind of car did you get your driver's license in; what number sibling are you in your family; how far do you live from where you grew up?
Every one of these stupid posts has millions of comments; I saw a count of 5 million on one. Aside from being used by companies and criminals to mine your personal information, why do people reply to these? Is it loneliness, or boredom? And when Facebook highlights a comment from a friend, I click on it, and usually I see several friends who commented on the same stupid question. Sometimes the questions are posed by west-coast radio stations, but all the friends who responded live in the northeast.
And people go into detail about their answer, explaining their family tree, or how they came about their first car, or where they were when thy tried a certain food. All that, just to have their comment go into the vast ether of the internet, with the other millions of comments. Why?
