King is well-known for writing horror and fantasy – but the horror and fantasy on Facebook got to be too much for him. He wrote on Twitter, "I'm quitting Facebook. Not comfortable with the flood of false information that's allowed in its political advertising, nor am I confident in its ability to protect its users' privacy."

That’s what I did and for the same reasons.

We have a nephew whose in-laws just moved nearby. We stopped by on Sunday to see the house. The guy offered me a beer, he said "I don't have any of that fancy beer, I've got Bud Light and Miller". So I had a Miller. Anyone who knows me, knows I don't drink Miller, don't talk about Miller, don't think about Miller.

On my Facebook feed, I got an ad for Miller High Life.

I apologize if I've already shared this story, but last time I visited my cousin in Florida (two? three? years ago), he warned me that he was working with tools and mentioned a specific one. Soon after, ads for that tool showed up on his Facebook feed. He'd never searched it. He said, "I think our phones are listening in our conversations, then advertising to us." Since then, I've heard several more stories - now including this one. It's not "big brother", it's "big advertiser".

I've been saying it for years.
Pick a random product, restaurant, or store that you wouldn't ever talk about or look up, and see what happens to your adds.

Then go out and buy some Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty Aluminum Foil to start making hats.
You'll thank me.

Then I would have nothing but aluminum foil ads.

I've always tended to think that it's not actually using the "listening" capability, but it's a coincidence people overlook. People search for things, their spouses search, then it pops up. One time I had a text conversation about tire wear, then I got a tire ad.

But I've been seeing more evidence that it has to be using the speech it's evaluating for voice commands. I had assumed that - in a civil society- nobody's using your discarded sampled speech.

I guarantee that I didn't text or search Miller beer. However, I did look at an article ranking the top craft beer companies. And I may be a target for beer ads. For all I know, I may have been getting Miller ads every week for the past 5 years, but I didn't think about it until I was given a Miller.

It's like when you buy a certain car; you suddenly notice every other one on the road, but you didn't care before.

I am off all social media completely. I think that smug turd Zuckerberg is not to be trusted. Plus every four years around this time all forms of social media turn into maddening echo chambers of shouting and belligerence. And that's just the Trump supporters.

My Facebook friend group is free of bickering and debate. However, a few of my friends like to comment on news stories where people are shitting on each other, and I see those comment threads. It reinforces my decision not to waste my time with that crap.

The wife and I might plan to go Russia in the other way. I think all you have to do is make some fake quotes and send them to all your friends. Then it's like a new wave.

Did anyone who quit Facebook miss it enough togo back? I never saw the need and like to joke that me and my parents are the only people on earth without an account.
