Let's talk uppity liquor

The stuff I referred to in the other thread is this

Excellent Tennessee whiskey, 100 proof, very smooth. Got it as a birthday present from the daughter.

My brother said he bought a small bottle of Jeppson's Malört and would I like to try some.... Most definitely. Wow that stuff was bitter. Anyone ever tried Malört?

I haven’t heard of it either, but I don’t usually go for that kind of booze.

I was at a client meeting yesterday afternoon and the CEO walked out with a bottle of Elijah Craig. Judging from the label and bottle, it looks like it was about $300 a bottle. I had a little, and it wasn’t as bad as I thought it might be, but I’m really not a bourbon guy.

I've seen it around and didn't think it was anything special, but they have a barrel proof series that starts at around $100, and rare versions that go into the thousands.

Looking at the bottle shape and labels, it matches up with the $300 bottles.
The stuff is wasted on me though. I doubt I’d have a much better reaction to the $3000 stuff either.

Right now, I'm drinking the excellent Uncle Nearest 1856 single barrel bourbon

And not surprisingly, my Google feed is giving me bourbon reviews. Here's an excerpt that I found interesting:

"Blue Note Juke Joint is an unfiltered, small-batch, straight bourbon. The nose is chlorine and dog fur while being much more pleasant than either of those sound".

Sign me up for that!

I've never been a bourbon guy, but maybe it's because I've never found one with the right expressions of urinal cake and schnauzer esters. Maybe I should try a single mutt instead of a blend.

Here

and here.
I know he said it was bourbon but that is not on the label anywhere.
Jim Beam is a bourbon and says it on the label:

Jack Daniels is sometimes served as bourbon but is not and it does not say anything but Whisky on the label.

Look who's suddenly an expert on bourbon.

This is from their website.

Many whiskeys that qualify as bourbon don't say bourbon on the label, just as many scotches don't say scotch. There's an old wives' tale that bourbon can only come from Kentucky, but Congress recognized bourbon as a "distinctive product of the US" in 1964.

Bourbon is American whiskey that is made from more than 50% corn, and is aged in charred oak barrels for at least 2 years. Jack Daniels uses their own process for making whiskey, which they call "Tennessee whiskey". So perhaps that's where people get the idea that whiskey from Tennessee that doesn't say "bourbon" on the label is not bourbon.

More rules than Magic The Gathering.

Is this one of those things where people (not Scotch, who I'm finding very helpful here, I'm talking about people in general) can say they're better than other people because they know the difference between various specific types of drinks based on where the grapes were smashed, what day of the week they were smashed, what color the grapes were, what heritage the person who smashed them is, how many toes they had and what religion their neighbor is?

*takes sip* "This is a '79 Jack Beam Jaegar-Ouzo made by the Doomkof family in Saarland on the German-French border after being soaked between wooden pallets. You didn't know that? Hmph! Peasant..."

But more importantly, this reminds me of a joke.

A man walks into a bar and demands, "Give me a 12 year old scotch and make it quick!" The bartender thinks, "Who is this asshole?" and hands him a 3 year old scotch. The man takes a sip, spits it out and yells, "This is a 3 year old scotch goddammit. I asked for a 12 year old scotch." The bartender gives him a 7 year old scotch. The man takes a sip, spits it out and yells, "This is a 7 year old scotch. I asked for a 12 year old scotch! Now give me a fuckin' 12 year old scotch goddammit." So the bartender gives him a 12 year old scotch. The man takes a sip and says, "It's about fuckin' time. Now that's good shit." Another man at the bar overhears this and hands the guy a shot glass, saying, "Here, try this." The man takes a sip, spits it out and yells, "This tastes like piss!!" The second man says, "It is! How old am I?"
