I haven't applied to this thread yet.

I like Rum. Bacardi is my favorite.

With the trade sanctions coming to an end with Cuba, I'll be interesting to see what happens in the way of Cuban Rum that will become available in the US. I'm sure Canadians Have been partaking in it for quite a while now.

I think rum and cigars are going to be like Mexican tequila. The Mexicans keep the best of it for themselves. (In any quantity at least.) I don't expect Cuba to be able to increase supply very quickly, and the prices will be high for what we can get, but this is long overdue.

Cuba never stopped exporting cigars and rum. They just couldn't export them to the US. Go anywhere else in the world and they have great Cuban cigars.

I haven't bought any hard liquor since I moved to Tennessee. McMinn county only allows sales of hard liquor in drinks with the exception of the city of Etowah. I may have to hunt around & find where I can buy some Rum

That's insane, I never heard of that. Here's a random convenience store in York, Maine. Note the full gambit of booze right behind the Slim Jims.

But because they're not sold in the US, the foreign resort markets offer only a predetermined variety of overpriced Cubans. I can't get local (Dominican, Honduran, etc) cigars when I travel to that area.

What's a foreign resort market? I don't know what you're talking about. When I go to Europe, I can buy any Cubans I want.

You seem cranky. I mentioned countries, and I talked about being in that area. I specifically named Dominican Republic, and Honduras. When one vacations in that area - let's call it the Caribbean - and stays in a resort area (where the tourists go, not where the residents live), the shops are all selling the same, limited, overpriced, selection of Cuban-only cigars. You can't get Dominican cigars, or Nicaraguan, or Honduran. The marketplaces in the resort areas are controlled by some kind of conglomerate. What happens when you go to Europe is irrelevant to this discussion.

Not cranky, just confused.

What happens in Europe is relevant because that's evidence of Cuba selling cigars other places than the US. European cigar sales are probably a better example of the future of US cigar sales than tourist resorts in countries where the pre-Castro cigar companies set up production after the revolution.

Exactly.
They won't be able to keep up with American demand when the floodgates are opened.
Cuban cigars are already overpriced in other places. I've gotten them in Canada and Europe, and there are better cigars for better prices. Cuba won't be able to grow more tobacco, or produce enough rum with their existing distilleries for quite some time. It's a good opportunity for them, but it will mean higher prices and lower quality for a while.

Prices will be high, but that's because they are the best cigars in the world.

I agree with this, but my point was that the scenario I described is the result of the US embargo, which affects places that American tourists vacation in. Hopefully, this will all get better soon.

There are several dry counties in Tennessee and Kansas. (they sell beer but no hard liquor). And you can't buy liquor in either state in a convenience store. Liquor store only. In Kansas the beer at convenience stores/grocery store is limited to 3.2 alcohol too, have to go to a liquor store for full strength beer. Colorado and North Dakota have 3.2 also.
However, they do sell liquor on Sunday in Kansas now, in certain counties. From 12-6 pm
