Without further ado .... the #1 song is probably easily guessable ... it is on 5 of your lists and it's absence so far would be a clue. It is also the #1 choice of 2 of us. The lowest vote it got from those who voted was #17 with 3 top 10 finishes (including the #1s). The #1 song is. .....

I'll most likely kick off the 90's Madness this weekend. My company having a fall conference seminar this week. I might be MIA for couple of days.

Can you do me a favor, either send me a copy in excel, or if you comfortable with ChatGPT send it a copy and ask it to summarize everyone’s 90’s music taste based on our lists. That would be interesting

...and of course for the other 4 voters, it didn't make their lists. So the best it could be ranked is 219 by me, 25 by Madison, 287 by Hectic, and 204 by Wolf. Perhaps we should've included that song in those positions, knowing how popular the song is.

That has to be the most pleasantly inoffensive, middle-of-the-road, milquetoast, safe-to-say-you-like-it-on-a-first-date, soccer-mom-approved, intergenerationally-acceptable song there is. Quite the contrast with the #2 song.
 
We all appreciate you, IRBS – I can speak for all of us, right? – for all your work in putting the list together. I had no idea what the number one song would be. I was really surprised. Here is an unusual version of Losing My Religion from the 1995 Higher Learning soundtrack. It's Tori Amos singing and playing her Bösendorfer grand piano.

When I did the 70s unmadness, the #1 song had 9/10 people voting for it. The #2 and 8/10. 45 songs in the 70s by my quick count were liked by 5 or more people which was 50% of the voters. We had only 9 voters for the 90s. The most we had was 6/9 for the #2 song. We had a grand total of 7 (yes 7) songs with 5 or more votes. So only 7 out of 763 were liked by 50% or better of us. To me this means that our musical tastes in the 90s were more diverse. Of course the 70s was only #1s so it may have also removed a lot of the diverse songs from our lists. But I keep coming back to this ....

Not voting just means 0 in the scheme of things. If 1 more person had of liked "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and put it in the upper half of their ranking, it would be the #1 song. But, as the old saying goes, if "ifs" and "buts" were candies and nuts, we would all have a Merry Christmas.

PM me your e-mail address. I will email you the spreadsheet. It started out in a spreadsheet. I would still be working on it if not for Excell and its formulas. When I watch the film "Apollo 13" the scene where they are working out complex orbit calculations with the slide rules is quite fascinating. It would be something like that.

Two things:
- The "#1 hits" rule for the 70s was a big factor, as that made the songs all lean toward the "pop" end of the spectrum. So it forced people like me to vote for the same songs as Channel98.
- The diversification of media (which occurred in the 80s, 90s, and beyond) enabled someone like me to never have to hear the shitty pop songs that others were listening to; while it also allowed those people to avoid the angry, head-splitting, depressed, and monotonous alternative rock songs that I liked.

Let's hope that if we were all stranded on an island, we'd at least have headphones.

Actually, despite my liking some pop tunes which you don't, I was surprised how similar our tastes are. We shared a vote for a lot of songs. I didn't do any cross-checking but I think I shared votes with you more than any of the other voters. I think we should be fine.
