Wolf, 35 songs went to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974. Forty-eight songs went to number one on the Cash Box Top 100 in 1974. Cher's Dark Lady was the only Billboard number one that didn't get to number one on the Cash Box Top 100 – it peaked at #2 – but 14 songs that did not reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100 went to number one on the Cash Box Top 100:

1-5 Leave Me Alone (Ruby Red Dress) – Helen Reddy
1-12 Time In A Bottle – Jim Croce
2-15 Americans – Byron McGregor
3-16 Boogie Down – Eddie Kendricks
3-23 Rock On – Davd Essex

Wolf said "70s." He didn't specify nineteen-seventies. I could have listed some of the big songs of the eighteen-seventies, including Home On The Range, Goodbye Liza Jane, Silver Threads Among The Gold, Carry Me Back To Old Virginny, The Lost Chord, My Grandfather's Clock, Go Tell It On The Mountain, What Child Is This, What A Friend We Have In Jesus, She'll Be Comin' Round The Mountain and I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen.

Thirty-five songs reached number one in 1974. Time In A Bottle went to number one on the December 29 1973 Hot 100 and was number one for two weeks.

I see the issue now. I originally posted this with 35 songs listed below, but when I created the form spreadsheet, only 20 appeared on the list. It was likely an error with Microsoft Forms yesterday especially since there were multiple duplicate entries of “Show and Tell” by Al Wilson on the 1974 form.

I don't want to vote for a 3rd time so I will wait until all the songs are added.

ETA: If the missing songs are #1 songs on Billboard, then should they not be added?

I count 36 #1 songs in that list for 1974. All billboard.

Don't worry, I'm not going to make everyone redo that form again. Once the voting is officially over. I will create a separate 1974 part 2 form with the missing songs that didn't appeared on that form. Along with any other wild card songs that didn't make the year forms.

I have some questions. How could Chicago - or any city - not have an east side? And why would it not have an east side in 1974, but have it earlier or later?

And about My Sharona. Are you referring to that as post-punk or some variation like power pop? I would agree with that. But that type of music was being made by Elvis Costello in '77, or Joe Jackson in early '79. And probably many others if I thought about it.

That's what my DJ told me on my little blue ball radio. I will have to deduct that point when we do round 2 of 1974. That will make an 8 a 7.

"My Sharona" just felt so different than anything I had heard before. Then in September "Good Girls Don't" and Sniff N The Tears "Drivers Seat" were being played at the dance bar Bucky's Den. I knew was going to be a young man of the 80's with a new wave of music. I never heard Elvis Costello until much later, just Elvis Presley

Wolf, I voted

I guess that happens. I was just saying that most of his songs that are played on the radio came out between '77 and '79.
I first heard "Allison" on one of the contemporary channels and I like "Veronica". I think I was turned off by his name for being Elvis, at first. But you can't change your name

I just looked at the video for "The Night Chicago Died" The drummer was the lead singer. Isn't that unusual? Don't most drummers in a group play in the background and don't sing?

We have a thread for that. Not usual but several examples:
Don Henley - Eagles
Phil Colins - Genisis

His name is Declan McManus. Costello is an old family name, and the name Elvis was created by his promoter.

It's not typical, but Phil Collins and Don Henley (Eagles) are 2 that come to mind.
