I have to say, one the things about DRC that keeps me interested, is how everyone's daily lives are so different from mine. This list right here is about what I do over 3 to 5 years. We've discussed your urban lifestyle before, but I'm wondering how you go about getting and paying for some of these tickets. Aren't they quickly sold-out, and outrageously expensive?

I am not front row center on most shows. Most are reasonable (relative term I suppose). I rarely pay over $100 / ticket. Some of them my son bought with his money. And with my wife's cancer, I usually make something that she want's to see a priority. Do it now not later.

Most of this comes from my slush fund. 4% of every paycheck goes into a stock fund purchasing the shares of the company I work for. For every $2 I put in, my company puts in $1. Redemptions from this fund plus tax refunds and vacation refunds and bonus all go into this slush fund. This funds vacations, travel and concerts.

And the church BBQ is free.

I used to do 4 or 5 concerts a year and a bunch of smaller club shows. B.C., I was down to one maybe two concerts a year.

This sounds exactly like my company 401k, except they match up to 4% at 100% (I put in 4%, they match it). Also, company stock is just one option. But the 401k is tax deferred, and withdrawals before age 59 1/2 are subject to a penalty. Plus, it's our retirement, so the point is to let it grow and compound.

In the past, my yearly bonus has gone towards our income tax payment, but lately it's become more of a slush fund.

My company's offer was to match up to a certain percent.....at their own discretion. In other words, they choose when they will match. I think the last time it was matched was over 15 years ago.

But it's not all bad news. We went from a plan where you could choose Aggressive/Conservative (5 choices) with a big booklet and explanations of all your options down to one piece of white 8 1/2 x 11 paper every quarter that says "what you started with" "what you contributed" "what we contributed" (zero again??) "what you've got now". No options. Not even on letterhead. My financial advisor CC'd me in an email to someone else and wrote the following: "He showed me the statements and they look extremely weird…."

Oh wait, that's more bad news.

That's alright because I'm pretty sure it was the 401K provider we used several years ago was in the news. Yeah, someone got arrested if I remember right. It was either the 401k or the health plan - pretty sure it was the 401K though

Oh wait, that's even more bad news.

I have the option to make it registered for retirement. I chose to just have it not.

I should clarify that 401k's are retirement plans, which is why I said "it's our retirement". I should have said "it's for our retirement", because I also have my company pension, as soon as I leave/retire. I guess they have different corporate rules and plans in Canada.

We have RRSPs which is equivalent to 401k I think. My company also has a pension. The stock saving plan can be either inside and RRSP (registered) or outside. I elected to have it outside.

Wowzers!!! Is your financial advisor OK with how that fits into your retirement plan?
That would make me nervous.

I was expecting the next thing my advisor would say is, "I called the police and they launched an investigation. Several people were arrested and all of the 401K funds of all employees were being diverted to Bernie Madoff." But the opposite happened. He said the company is reputable. I guess only time will tell if our money is being taken care of. I'm not too concerned though because many many years ago I dropped it to 1% and have been focusing on my Roth instead. Last year, I maxed it out.

If they aren’t matching, there isn’t much incentive to go heavy with your contribution, especially if you’re sending money to other accounts.

That's half of my no incentive. The other half is waiting for the inevitable news headline how some shyster spent my entire 401k on hookers and blow.

  • Bill Burr [08/24 Toronto, ON] (comedian)
I just found out this asshole takes your cellphone (he doesn't actually take, they lock it in a bag) for his concert. I re-read all the fine print with the ticket and it does not mention anything about it. I am not sure they have the legal right to do this. I am deciding whether I should make a fuss. My son says I should just bite the bullet and do it. I have considered making a huge stink. I have considered a legal challenge. And I have considered setting an alarm with a different ring tone every 5 minutes so everybody around me gets annoyed and I can say I can't do anything about it since my phone is locked. But that seems to be too much of an asshole move even for me. I have also considered just plucking myself on front row centre tickets as my ticket is on my phone and how the fuck will they verify or even know where I am sitting?

I certainly won't be giving him any more money or doing any applauding.

Tell 'em your daughter is in the hospital, and if things take a sudden bad turn the nurse has instructions to call you so you can leave the concert early to say your last goodbyes. What monster would take a phone from someone after that story?

  • Imagine Dragons [08/22 Toronto, ON]
This show was last night. This was a show which I was a guest of my son. I was not expecting to really enjoy myself (I don't dislike the Imagine Dragons but they are not a group that I would list as one of my favourites). I was disappointed to find that the opening act was a c-rapper named Macklemore.

We arrived at the show early because my son did not want to miss Macklemore. The show was at Rogers Centre. This was the first time I have been at a concert there. When we got in the lighting was blue. It was weird seeing the baseball field not a field. The pitching mound was still there. Our phones and my watch looked weird I suspect some sort of compensation algorithm by Apple or tricks with our eyes. Interesting effect. The sound at the stadium seemed ok although when the artists spoke you could hear the echo and the rebounds off the concrete roof. The roof was closed partly because of the mood lighting and the other part the thunderstorms in the forecast.

They had an opening act for the opening act. A group called "King Elliot". This was primarily a female lead singer and a keyboardist. She was British. She primarily sang about woe is me stuff -- an art form done much better in the 90s by Alanis Morrisette. Neither my son or I were impressed.

Then came the next surprise. Macklemore. I found myself enjoying the music. I convinced myself not to listen to the c-rap and just listen to the music. By the end the c-rap didn't matter and I really enjoyed the show. And something about him seemed familiar. After the show I found that I had heard a song of his I liked which I heard on Dick Clark's show last 12/31.

He did not do this at this show. This was a disappointment once I connected the dots. Setlist below.

When we entered the Rogers Centre we got little wristbands with a flat square on it. Completely forgot about it until Imagine Dragons came on. When they sang their first song, the thing lit up. The square put out various colours and patterns. It made an interesting effect across the crowd. And each was independently controlled. You had twinkling effects, and "wave" effects. I am really curious about the technology because it was very interesting and cool. At the end they turned all the units on so going home you could see whomever was at the concert. It's still flashing now on my desk. The group did a fantastic show. He dedicated "Forever Young" to Ukraine and had a very impationed speech about it. The little wristbands flashed blue and yellow during the song. Pretty cool. I enjoyed the music but not as much as Macklemore (strange). My son says it was because I had lower expectations for Mackemore so it was a bigger differential. He was in cloud 9 from the show. Setlist below.
