Cody began in radio in 1971 at age 12, assisting his father, a minister whose sermons aired on WLBN in Lebanon, Kentucky. He later worked at stations in Lexington, Louisville, Orlando and San Antonio and since 1994 had hosted mornings at WSM in Nashville. The first song he played on WSM was If The Good Die Young by Tracy Lawrence – and today Cody died. Cody was inducted into the Country Music Disc Jockey Hall of Fame in 2008.
