KHJ in Los Angeles played The Candy Man only a few times in February 1972. General manager Dwight Case decided the song was not "cool" and didn't fit the top-40 format – even though he had no objection to Elvis Presley's Until It's Time For You To Go, the Carpenters' Hurting Each Other or the 5th Dimension's Together Let's Find Love. KHJ quit playing the song. Meanwhile, it went to number one nationally.
The Candy Man was written by Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley and first sung by Aubrey Woods as the owner of Bill's Candy Shop in the 1971 movie Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory.
