Paul Williams wrote An Old Fashioned Love Song in early 1971 and offered it to the Carpenters. Richard Carpenter didn't like the song. Williams then offered it to Micky Dolenz. (The Monkees had broken up in 1970.) Micky was hesitant to record it – so Williams gave it to Three Dog Night, who had a #4 hit with the song in November 1971.
