Finished Kara Swisher's 'Burn Book: A Tech Love Story' from the famous tech journalist who spills the tea on some of Silicon Valley's biggest names. And implicates quite a few as the raging assholes you'd think they were (Musk and Zuckerberg were frequent targets). 4.5 stars. Excellent read!
 
I finished reading a book. It's Hard to be a Person by Brett Newski. I checked it out of our library. Humorist advice on defeating anxiety, surviving the world and having more fun. The author is a musician. Had a line that Dave Grohl is my Dad :)

I checked out a new book: Bear by Julia Phillips. It's a large print book. I just learned about large print books so this should be nice to read

Sounds like an interesting read. One of my fellow clarinet players in our wind ensemble has all the music enlarged. He manages to keep the page count the same, but it's bigger paper, and the notes take up the whole page (he truncates the headers and footers). But because it's all reprints, the pages for each piece aren't connected, so it takes him forever to find the right music.

I checked this one out because Charles from "A Man On The Inside" was going to listen to Ezra Klein in the car to tune out his daughter Emily Season 1 Episode 5. I did not know it was commentary on the Presidential elections, so I stopped and returned it.

Brad Meltzer: The First Conspiracy The Secret Plot to Kill George Washington.
I listened on and around the days before Presidents Day. I listened to Disc 1, 2 and 9. Disc 1 was good, Disc 2 started going into the history of the Revolutionary War, so I jumped to Disc 9

This was the best one. I like all the tracks. It has "Our Day Will Come" "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" "The Girl From Ipanema"
A duet with Tony Bennett. And it has "Valerie" which I've liked even more since the UW Hockey Band played it the last game I went to.
I believe Van Morrison is the original. I'm keeping this one for a few more listens when I do my puzzles
 
I took out a nice haul this week at the library.

First, I was a bit disappointed but not enough to inquire. I donated an NFL Films Music C/D a week before the SuperBowl. The songs they would play in "This Week In The NFL." I had an extra copy and thought someone might like checking it out. I did not see it on the shelves though.

I checked out for DVD's
"While We're Young" with Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts and Amanda Seyfried. It's about a married mid age couple that starts to engage with a younger couple and all the excitement and problems with the couple's relationship.

"A Collection of 2007 Academy Awards Short Films" So far, I watched the winning film "The Mozart of Pickpockets". A homeless little boy latches on to two thief's who take him in and train to be a thief too. I think my theater is going to have one of these short film showings before this year's Academy Awards, of which I'd like to go.

CD's
I still have not let go of my Amy Winehouse c/d. I may extend it for another two weeks. It's a great listen while I patiently wait for the Laufey season to start.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood soundtrack
I loved the movie and the cast and follow the cast in new movies and love associating the songs to the movie scenes. It also includes the radio commercials, jingles and the KHJ-LA dj's announcing in the movie: Robert W Morgan and Don Steele

In Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, I love how the façades of the Hollywood Boulevard businesses were rebuilt – for real, not digitally – to look the way they did in 1969. But the movie has a lot of mistakes. Here are four. The movie shows a Starbucks and a can of Coors Light. Neither existed in 1969. In a scene taking place on Sunday, February 9, 1969, Robert W. Morgan is heard on the car radio. Morgan hosted a Monday-to-Friday morning show on KHJ from 1965 to 1971 and in 1972-73. He never worked on Sunday. In that same scene, he is heard giving the weather forecast. The predicted high is "95 downtown, 105 in the valley." Really? In the middle of winter?

By the way, the W stood for Wilbur.
 
I meant to mention the SXM 60's Gold jingle sounds similar to the KHJ jingle on the "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" soundtrack.

My latest checkout at the library included my first bike ride out to the library this year. I was listening to Luna, the Latino Jazz channel, on the way and back.
I really enjoyed as I haven't listened to it on a bike ride before.

Buffy Sainte Marie: "Illuminations" I checked out because of the song she had on the "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" movie/soundtrack. Good.
Carly Simon: "No Secrets" With her hits "The Right Thing To Do" "You're So Vain" and "We Have No Secrets" Good.
Sara Bareilles: "Little" Popular contemporary artist, I was disappointed with this one.

DVD's
"All About Alex" with Jason Ritter, Aubrey Plaza and Maggie Grace. Kind've like "The Big Chill". Former college friends come to the cottage home of Alex, who attempted suicide, and watch him from attempting again and find a pretty cool stray dog along the way

"Scream 6": Checked out because I liked "Scream 7" at the movies but it was not very good

And I'm still reading my book. Have another week before I need to return
 
SiriusXM's jingles are produced by JAM Creative Productions of Dallas, using the instrumental background of jingles produced by PAMS (Production, Advertising & Merchandising Service). PAMS, also in Dallas, was in business from 1951 to 1978 and produced KHJ's jingles from 1965 to 1978. They were sung by the Johnny Mann Singers. Yes, It was the one right off the bat 0:02 and at 1:25 and 1:35 that sounds like the one instrumental used on 60's Gold.

Madison was talking about seeing Project Hail Mary and I can't wait to see it. I may wait to watch it at home.

But either way it's source material is the book written by Andy Weir, my favorite living author. I'm sure I've said this before but he is the modern Michael Crichton the way he weaves real science with the shit he makes up to make it all more believable.

I know Ryan Gosling is the star of PHM but that's all I know or want to know. I read it when it first came out in 2021 and my basic memory is that a guy is tasked with restarting the sun and when he wakes up in his ship he has amnesia. Along the way he meets an alien with the same task and that alien is much more interesting that normal movie aliens. It is like a sentient, very intelligent rock. They then work together to get the job done.

I need to read it again. Because once I see the movie I wont be able to get it's depiction out of my head. I want to read it again to see how much of what I picture Andy describing in my head is similar to our much different than how it's represented in the movie.

For as much as I love Weir's work, I have not really looked into the man before today. Check out this interview. He is every bit as much a nerd as I pictured. They go off track about various space topics over and over again and it's fun to watch.



Also he's a science nerd but still digs football naming it Project Hail Mary even though that's a strictly American reference. That makes me like him more.

It is a good movie. Worthy of consideration to see at the theater. His discussion of Star Trek is amusing. That line something about most science fiction today is based upon original Star Trek except today's Star Trek. I can agree that Discovery is not watchable. I tried. Star Fleet Academy is not bad to me. I like the romantic relationship between Caleb and the Betazad girl. But I guess it is not well liked. Picard Season 1 & 2 got lots of criticism, but Season 3 was really good with all the Next Generation cast returning. But I agree and nice to see that he liked Strange New Worlds. The 10-year prequel to the original Star Trek with Captain Pike and a young Captain Kirk.

And I was interested in his discussion of the female character in the movie which would be Eve. She was tough with Grace but capable of being broken down. I kept wondering if they would have time to be intimate before he was sent up to space. The concept of the astrophasge is pretty good.

I think you know I also like football too. I have to do my Library list soon, but I checked out a Florence and the Machine c/d recently hoping they would have that song "The Bomb". When she sings, I just love the (bomb), I think of a quarterback going back to throw the long one. I'm sure it has nothing to do with that but that's what always comes into my head. I've seen the play work many times both as an amazing feat and a heartbreaking one.
 
This morning was the ribbon cutting ceremony at the library for the final completion of the two-year Library Restoration project. They had plenty of speeches, goodies and yummy cake.

After which, I did my first check out in quite some time

This was my second ribbon cutting ceremony in two days. Yesterday was Operation Fresh Start/Habitat for Humanity. An open house, with more speeches and cookies, of the house the city youth helped to build. I asked my Sweetie where they keep that big pair of scissors.

When I visit my dad in the winter we will watch several old movies usually on TCM. It's funny when I see the title and start watching it then connect it to a Remington Steele episode. Usually something about the plot triggers it. In my opinion when they stopped doing that the show kind of lost it's vieweship a bit which lead to its ratings issues.

I liked the Project Hail Mary and The Martian books equally. The Martian is a WAAAAAAAAAY better movie though. Hail Mary is really good but to me The Martian is the very rare example (the only other one I can name offhand is Jurassic Park) where the movie is better than the book.

Anyway Andy Weir is my favorite living author.......He's the new Crichton with how he mixes real science in with his fake shit. Apparently he really knows his shit about space. He has a quote when writing The Martian: "What if Neil deGrasse Tyson reads this?". And on his publicity tour for Project Hail Mary he did Neil's show.

Also is there any other household name smarter than Neil? I'm sure there are thousands of academics that have him beat but in terms of famous smart people he's numero uno right?

I like to read one fiction and one history book at all times. I won't get into the history one now but my Uncle recommended The Last Signal to me. It's a Dan Brown book and I only know him from The DaVinci Code books that I never read but I saw at least the first Tom Hanks movie.

I'm only like 5 pages in but it's about an extinction level event that we are being warned about through coded messages in historical sites. Seems like an interesting premise and I hope I dig it because I want to trust my uncle's suggestions going forward.

Also check out this embarrassing shit. When I turned 40 like almost on my birthday I became farsighted. And now I understand how my father when he was like 80 and couldn't hear anymore, took like 7 years before he would actually buy hearing aids even though we all told him over and over to get them........because I am now almost 43 and I could fix this by just going to Walgreens and buying like a $5 pair of reading glasses but I refuse to do so. Instead, what I do is read my Kindle with the text looking like this:
