Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

The Awards are manipulated and rigged by various insiders to promote the content they are promoting.
The weekly charts are gamed by artists and record companies.
So neither are bellwethers of the industry.
I never claimed the chart was.

I never claimed the chart was.
You literally told me "That still wouldn't wipe away the 100 Grammys that Taylor Swift and Kanye West have received. It's all a clusterfuck, just look away" and "If you can't see how they relate as a bellwether of the industry, I can't help you."

Actually, I didn't. See below.

That still wouldn't wipe away the 100 Grammys that Taylor Swift and Kanye West have received. It's all a clusterfuck, just look away.

If you can't see how they relate as a bellwether of the industry, I can't help you.

To get us back on topic: Is 2 Live Crew a OHW? They had at least two top 40s... ;)
Damn good one. In fact, only two top 40s, so perfect for this thread.

2 Live Crew

#20 "Banned In The USA"
#26 "Me So Horny"

Definitely best-remembered for their lesser hit. I would say subjectively they are a one-hit wonder. I think nobody except big rap fans and 90s nostalgia buffs know/remember "Banned".

There's a comic irony in getting played on Top 40 radio with a song about banned from radio and record stores, then being forgotten as the industry moves past you.

Drake’s Certified Lover Boy posted a monster performance on the Billboard Hot 100 chart this week, taking nine of the Top 10 slots and charting all 21 songs in the Top 40.

BROKEN CHART!

NOPE!
Again, my friends, the charts are just snapshots in time. Like every other popularity contest, it doesn't mean anything over the course of history.

Blue Oyster Cult
#12 "Don't Fear The Reaper"
#40 "Burnin' For You"

I say definitely NOT subjectively a one-hit wonder.
When I was in high school I was doing a 1 hour show over lunch at the high school radio station, On the final show of th year, my partner and I decided we would each do 1/2 the show with our favourite music. He filled his 1/2 with Blue Oyster Cult tracks. I think I played mostly Rush "Permanent Waves" and a couple of other songs. I hadn't really heard of Blue Oyster Cult before that day and I assumed they were a huge 70s band.

Of course my knowledge of music that was not current those days was not great. We were looking at the old albums which were in the radio station library and were wondering who this Jimmy Hendrix guy was. He had a lot of albums.

Tone Loc
#2 "Wild Thing"
#4 "Funky Cold Medina"

I say not subjectively a one hit wonder, but I bet people call him one anyway.

Blue Oyster Cult is not a one-hit wonder.
Tone-Loc is not a one-hit wonder.

Here's one for discussion: Quincy Jones. Hit the Billboard Top 40 multiple times as the lead artist, but never (as far as I know) sang on his works. One-hit wonder? No-hit wonder?

Technically Q has six top 40 hits credited to him but they all feature someone else doing the heavy lifting performance-wise, like James Ingram on "Just Once" and "One Hundred Ways" for example. But I don't think of Q when I hear any of "his" hits. So, grey-area?

His roles for his 1981 album (with three top 40s):

Quincy Jones – Producer (all tracks), Vocal Arrangements (1-4, 7), Rhythm Arrangements (1, 3, 4, 8), Synth Arrangements (1, 4, 6), Backing Vocals (2)

Don't forget Hikky Burr with Bill Cosby.
Great song. The remix album was criminally cool.

In the first episode of Punky Brewster in 1984, Punky was singing and dancing to Maniac. She did that in a few later episodes as well, She never – ever – sang any other Michael Sembello song. He's a one-hit wonder. I say so – and Punky says so.
