I'm pretty damn sure I don't like these, but I don't remember them by name and probably haven't heard them since '97 so they go under "? 16"

Jewel always kinda had that 'If Phoebe from Friends made it big' feel about her. Never really got into her. Paula Cole was alright.

If so, I haven't seen that (outside movie theme versions) since the "I'd Like To Teach the World to Drink Coke .... I mean Sing" in the early 70s.

It’s weird but those songs all mostly sound annoying to me.

Yes. From Genius.com

This song was written by Diane Warren for the soundtrack of 1997’s blockbuster Nicholas Cage film “Con Air”. It was originally intended for and recorded by LeAnn Rimes, but apparently Walt Disney Pictures, parent company of Touchstone Pictures which was releasing the film, felt that 14 year old Rimes was too young for the subject matter and her version had too much of a pop feel. They directed a re-record with Yearwood.

How Do I Live by LeAnn Rimes and How Do I Live by Trisha Yearwood were released on the same day, May 27, 1997. Wooh! The song has been recorded by more than 50 other artists including David Young, Gloria Loring and the Duprees. Dexys Midnight Runners, best known for their 1983 number-one hit Come On Eileen, released a version on their 2016 CD Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish & Country Soul. At that time the band was known as simply Dexys – and Kevin Rowland's singing on this one is awful.

On some of these countdowns, I'll count (as a "like") a song that I liked when first introduced; and other times, I'll count a song that I didn't listen to back then, but I'll play it now as a nostalgia song. I'd put all those songs in the category of "OK" when I first heard them, but got tired of hearing a million times, and would probably not listen to now.

While I can appreciate that these were breakout hits for these artists; and when new, they offered a unique new sound; they're the epitome of genteel, inoffensive music for people who don't really like music. And they all got played to death.

I seem to remember that they started playing a live-in-concert version of the Sister Hazel song. And I thought, "How bizarre that the audience seems really into this song that couldn't have been familiar to them at the time".

In 1997 I was likely still just listening to classic rock, and getting deeper into the classic rock catalogue, trying to avoid new songs, then I’d hear these while shopping somewhere and getting annoyed that they weren’t playing classic rock.

I got over the classic rock obsession a couple years later

For Paula Cole, I prefer "I Am So Ordinary" which came out before "Cowboys". I think it's her best song.

1. I Am So Ordinary
2. Where Have All The Cowboys Gone
3. Eloise
4. I Don't Wanna Wait

If she can muster up one more song I like, she'll get a spot on my "High Fives" thread...

I like "Me" from her "This Fire" album. That is the only album I have of hers.
