80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

Opening track of Mexican Moon (1993). The singles were "Heal It Up", "Mexican Moon" and "Jonestown". But should have been "Jenny I Read" and "Jesus Please Forgive Me (For The Things I'm About To Say)" because those two are incredible!

1986 actual order. I missed FOUR consecutive chart toppers. Wow!

Good 12
Okay 11
Bad 17

30: SOMEBODY’S OUT THERE - TRIUMPH

Didn't sound familiar at all, but I said the same thing three years ago. Still think it's not bad.

13: THE RAIN – ORAN “JUICE” JONES

That's right, silly rabbit
Trix are made for kids, don't you know that?
You without me like cornflake without the milk!

12: WORD UP - CAMEO

My son: "Oh this is that song with the weird voice"
My wife: "Great, this will stuck in my head all day now"

10: ALL CRIED OUT – LISA LISA & CULT JAM WITH FULL FORCE

5: HUMAN – THE HUMAN LEAGUE

My guess

1: TRUE COLORS – CYNDI LAUPER

The other two guessed this. As soon as I saw they'd guessed it, I knew I'd lost.

Will never get into the top 40
#41 Five Star "Can't Wait Another Minute"
#42 Jermaine Stewart "Jody"
#44 Howard Jones "You Know I Love You Don't You"
#46 Midnight Star "Midas Touch"

#52 Temptations "Lady Soul"
#59 Elton John "Heartache All Over The World"
#63 Stacy Lattisaw "Nail It To The Wall"
#66 Outfield "Everytime You Cry"
#69 Police "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86"
#75 Jesse Johnson & Sly Stone "Crazay"
#77 Bananrama "More Than Physical"
#80 David Lee Roth "Goin' Crazy!"
#83 Joan Jett "Good Music"
#85 Bad Company "This Love"
#87 Andy Taylor "When the Rain Comes Down"
#89 Device "Who Says"
#91 Luther Vandross "Give Me The Reason"
#92 Berlin "Like Flames"
#95 Kenny Loggins "Playing With The Boys"
#98 Commodores "Goin' To The Bank"
#100 Billy Squier "Love Is The Hero"

Kenny Loggins co-wrote Playing With The Boys with Starship producer Peter Wolf. The song is heard during the beach volleyball scene in the 1986 Tom Cruise movie Top Gun. In 2021, Loggins recorded a new version of the song – we're playing with the girls now – with Australian singer/songwriter/guitarist Butterfl;y Boucher. Yes, that's her real name.

No surprises.
Will never get into the top 40
#69 Police "Don't Stand So Close To Me '86"

This is the cut they put on their greatest hits album. It is a completely fucked up version. There was no reason to do this. What's worse, it deprived fans from the real version on the greatest hits album (until they invented iTunes that is). I am not surprised it never made the top 40 as it sucked.

Yeah I like the whole album, but don't remember hearing that one or "All The Love In The World" (which hit #19!!) on the radio. However, I remember hearing "Say It Isn't So" and that didn't chart (except #18 on the Rock Chart).

Like last week, my list feels thin again. I think I should have at least one more candidate than the two I've got

EARLIER
ONJ "Physical"
Hall & Oates "I Can't Go For That"
J Geils Band "Centerfold"
Vangelis "Chariots Of Fire"
Stevie/Paul "Ebony & Ivory"
Human League "Don't You Want Me"
Survivor "Eye Of The Tiger"
Steve Miller Band "Abracadabra"
John Cougar "Jack & Diane"
Chicago "Hard To Say I'm Sorry"

Men At Work "Who Can It Be Now"
Bill/Jennifer "Up Where We Belong"

LATER
Toni Basil "Mickey"
Lionel "Truly"

I started thinking – I do that sometimes – about Abracadabra. I'm wondering how many other song titles have at least five A's and no other vowel. Here are two:
Earl Brown's 1958 single Pachalafaka, which failed to chart, and the Blendells' La La La La La, which reached #62 on the Hot 100 in October 1964,
