39: ALL THIS TIME - TIFFANY

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

30: SHE DRIVES ME CRAZY – FINE YOUNG CANNIBALS

My guess at #1. It never reached #1. D'oh.

17: ETERNAL FLAME – THE BANGLES

Someone else guessed this.

1: LOST IN YOUR EYES – DEBBIE GIBSON

Someone else guessed this, and won.

#52 Boy Meets Girl "Bring Down the Moon"
#58 Giant Steps "Into You"

If these had made the top 40, I'd be posting about them in the two-hit wonder thread, wondering if anyone knew these songs and thought they were still relevant.

#90 Inner City "Good Life"

Nine top 40s in the UK, but only two minor hits in the US (both peaked in the 70s).

Won't get into the top 40
#47 Kenny G "We've Saved The Best For Last"
#51 New Edition "Can You Stand The Rain"
#52 Boy Meets Girl "Bring Down the Moon"
#58 Giant Steps "Into You"
#63 Traveling Wilburys "End Of The Line"
#66 Will To Power "Fading Away"
#69 Fixx "Driven Out"
#71 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young "Got It Made"
#72 Simply Red "It's Only Love"
#74 Huey Lewis & The News "Give Me the Keys"
#75 Cheap Trick "Never Had A Lot To Lose"
#77 Pasadenas "Tribute (Right On)"
#79 Timelords "Doctorin' The Tardis"
#80 Love And Money "Halleluiah Man"
#85 Marc Almond "Tears Run Rings"
#88 Kiara "This Time"
#89 Kenny Loggins "Tell Her"

10. good.
Lots of channel changers.

I take it you really hated #2 to not list it:
( 4) 2: THE LOVER IN ME - SHEENA EASTON

Interestingly March 4th was the chart date (Saturday) in both 1978 & 1989.

I always find charts from this era interesting, because I was NOT listening to Top 40 radio at this time. Mostly cassettes in my car, & CD's/vinyl at home.

38: ANGEL OF HARLEM – U2

I generally like U2 just fine, but I never cared much for the stuff off "Rattle And Hum". Just didn't buy their attempt at American roots music.

37: YOUR MAMA DON’T DANCE - POISON
36: THE LAST MILE - CINDERELLA
35: CRYIN’ - VIXEN
34: WHEN THE CHILDREN CRY – WHITE LION

Hair Band Avalaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanche!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( I like 1 of these songs - try to guess which one, & the 97th correct guess wins tickets to see Tora Tora at Little Gravy's this weekend! )
28: STAND – R.E.M.

I generally like R.E.M. just fine ( the IRS era, mostly ), but sweet Jeezus do I hate this song.
24: WHEN I’M WITH YOU - SHERIFF

Wasn't this one of those ones where it was an older song, & became a hit outta nowhere? And everybody was looking at each other like, "wha' happen'?" And then I came along & said "Payola happened, motherfuckers."

9: SURRENDER TO ME – ANN WILSON AND ROBIN ZANDER

Cheap Trick is one of my all-time top 5 bands. But I couldn't hum this if you put a gun to my head. And honestly, why would you do that? Ya friggin' weirdo.
7: WHAT I AM – EDIE BRICKELL AND THE NEW BOHEMIANS

I used to have a buddy who would sing "What I be, be what you not, put what you be away". And it would make me laugh.

Man...overall, seeing this list was a great reminder of why I wasn't listening to Top 40 radio at this time. A LOTTA junk in here.

Fill his hymen? Anatomically impossible!
:eek: :eek::eek:

She was talented and beautiful, but had many troubles in life. I remember the videos to "Living All Alone" and "Sacred Kind of Love" played on BET. I recently watched an "Unsung" episode on YouTube about her career too.
Pearl Harbor & The Explosions

WTF?! Damn that's offensive. And I'm tough to offend. The modern version would be naming your band Nine Eleven & The Twin Towers
I agree. I looked them up and they were a punk band from the Bay Area.
another song that bubbled, entered the 100, and bubbled again
So weird!
I wasn't expecting to see this happen so soon. I really have my eye out for this now.

I'll go with "Yo Mama So Fat" ... er, I mean "Your Mama Don't Dance"

Wasn't this one of those ones where it was an older song
The song first peaked at #61 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. Due to the low performance of the song, Sheriff later disbanded. In 1988, Nationwide Communications (owner of several radio stations) began to add older songs from acts like UB40 (“Red Red Wine”), Benny Mardones (“Into The Night”), Sheriff (“When I’m With You”) and Synch (“Where Are You Now?”) into rotation, sending these past minor hits back onto the charts.

From a 1989 news article:

"Where Are You Now" is getting push from the radio station conglomerate that sparked revival of UB40's "Red Red Wine" and the Sheriff ballad. "When I'm With You." Years after the initial, relatively unsuccessful, release of both those songs, each has returned to the airwaves and topped the national charts. The credit is generally attributed to Nationwide Communications, a conglomerate of radio stations, which has pushed the older, forgotten songs. Last year, the group's Tuscon, Ariz., station, helped spark the rise of UB40's 1983 version of "Red Red Wine" to number one on the Billboard charts last year. This year, KLUC-FM in Las Vegas, another Nationwide station, began playing Sheriff's 1982 power ballad. The song topped out at number one on the Billboard charts this week. "I always thought it was a hit," said Jay Taylor, music director of KLUC-FM. Taylor feels that when the Sheriff song came out in 1982, there were many other "power ballads" and the song was lost in the shuffle. "I found it in my music collection I started playing it and I got a tremendous reaction." Taylor said he taped copies of the song, sent them to disk jockey friends. With so many stations adding the song to their play lists. Capitol Records subsequently re-released the single.

My guess was "Don't You Forget About Me", coming in this week at #62. Oof! Don't know what the others guessed but it has to be a lot better than my choice.

35. THIS IS NOT AMERICA - DAVID BOWIE / PAT METHENY GROUP

Sha la la la? Very easy listening.

31. TURN UP THE RADIO - AUTOGRAPH

When drummer Keni Richards' friend, Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth, asked him to join him on the road to party on their 1984 tour, Richards said he couldn’t because his then-unnamed band was re-recording their demos for free with renowned producer & engineer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones). The next day, Roth put Richards on the phone with Eddie Van Halen who offered his band an opening slot on the tour. It was soon after this the band chose the name Autograph.

Five months into Van Halen’s tour, the head of RCA Records saw Autograph at Madison Square Garden and signed them. Their debut album Sign In Please was released in October. Its lead single “Turn Up The Radio” – the last song written for it, and one RCA originally didn’t want included on the album – became a surprise pop crossover hit in early 1985.

21. SAVE A PRAYER - DURAN DURAN

Not sure why a song they released in 1982 charted in 1985.

20. METHOD OF MODERN LOVE - HALL & OATES

Might've heard him wrong but did MG say that this was their last song to reach the top 5? If so, no - it was "Everything Your Heart Desires" in '88.

2. CARELESS WHISPER - WHAM! FEATURING GEORGE MICHAEL **

My son: "This song to me is 'If I play the saxophone sexily enough, will you come back to me?'"

#75 Vels "Look My Way"

Wow is this bad. It's even got a Blondie/Rapture rap in the middle.

Chinese New year, tray of dishes crashing
Babies screaming, laughing, playing
Puppies in a pet shop, dog pound
And if you can’t get down, get up

#77 Robey "One Night in Bangkok"

Why?? And that video....??

#98 Roman Holliday "One Foot Back In Your Door"

Meh, not too bad. Too much clapping though.

Won't ever get into the top 40

#47 Jermaine Stewart "The Word Is Out"
#48 Bronski Beat "Small Town Boy"
