My guess for 1982.
I missed "Chariots of Fire" and put the wrong Lionel song. Other than that, got 'em all and almost in the right order.
You look to be correct.
This is why I avoid the 80s thread after posting my guess..... until after I've heard the countdown. And right now I'm listening to #1.
It debuted on the August 15 2020 Hot 100 chart at #19 – and the next week fell to #99
BROKEN CHART!!! (since at least 2013)

Good 16
Okay 5
Bad 19

40: TAKE OFF - BOB & DOUG McKENZIE

I am your father, Luke. Give in to the dark side of the force, you knob.

34: CHARIOTS OF FIRE - VANGELIS

Until about 6 or 7 years ago, I'd always assumed this was pronounced VAN-jell-iss. And yes, a computer image file is a JIFF not a GIFF.

33: CALL ME - SKYY

Just did a search in this thread. It's the second time this song has aired since I've been listening to the VJ. Didn't sound familiar.

30: DADDY'S HOME - CLIFF RICHARD

849ec66b71f5b46eaaf54fdc6fd56492.jpg

27: TONIGHT I'M YOURS - ROD STEWART

If you're gonna play "Young Turks", just play "Young Turks" not this counterfeit!

26: ABACAB - GENESIS

Did MG really say that the song was named after the original chords of the song but they changed it and so the song could have been called ABACUCABUCACUBCUABUB. How does one play a U chord?

18: I LOVE ROCK N' ROLL - JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS

Note to self. This will likely be the next #1 in 1982. If I pick something else, please feel free to hit the Quote button and rub it in my face circa 10 weeks from now.

1: CENTERFOLD - THE J. GEILS BAND

My pick! Don't know if I'm the only winner though. Haven't been told anyone else's guesses.

Won't ever make the top 40
#42 John Hall Band "Crazy (Keep On Falling)"
#43 Peabo Bryson "Let The Feeling Flow"
#44 AC/DC "Let's Get It Up"
#45 Teddy Pendergrass "You're My Latest, My Greatest Inspiration"
#48 Player "If Looks Could Kill"
#51 Earth Wind & Fire "Wanna Be with You"
#53 Prism "Turn On Your Radar"
#55 Steve Miller Band "Circle of Love"
#57 Sammy Hagar "I'll Fall In Love Again"
#58 Irene Cara "Anyone Can See"
#60 Anne Murray "Another Sleepless Night"
#63 Conductor "Voice On The Radio"
#65 Doobie Brothers "Here to Love You"
#66 Commodores "Why You Wanna Try Me"
#70 TG Sheppard "Only One You"
#71 Petula Clark "Natural Love"
#78 All Sports Band "Opposites Do Attract"
#79 Madleen Kane "You Can"
#80 Sugarhill Gang "Apache"
#84 George Benson "Never Give Up On A Good Thing"
#85 George Duke "Shine On"
#86 Barbra Streisand "Memory"
#89 Kool & The Gang "Steppin' Out"
#90 Survivor "Summer Nights"
#91 Time "Cool (Part 1)"
#92 Grover Washington Jr "Be Mine (Tonight)"
#93 Chubby Checker "Running"
#95 Placido Domingo/John Denver "Perhaps Love"
#97 McGuffey Lane "Start It All Over"

I call the early 80s the "Young Turks" era for Rod Stewart. He did about 10 songs that sound almost exactly the same. FYI: "Young Turks" is still on the hot 100. Heading down.

Of the bottom 60, no surprises.

This was huge on my local Urban radio station when I was a kid. It was a #1 R&B hit.

I didn't realize the premise of the song at that time. The singer is making herself "available" to the boyfriend of one of her friends:

Well, I've been watchin' you, boy
And I got what you want, got what you need
Though your girlfriend's a friend of mine
Here's my number and a dime, call me anytime

27: TONIGHT I'M YOURS - ROD STEWART

I heard this on a streaming service and had to look it up. It sounded like "Young Turks" so I wanted to see it was on that album. My suspicions were confirmed...

Next week is 1980. Either 02/23 or 03/01 most likely the 23rd. Won't be a repeat countdown. I was going to make a guess @ #1 but didn't because I don't want to spoil sadchilds fun. Turns out I would have been completely wrong as I was thinking of 1981. If it was 1981 I would have been right.

I'm thinking 2/23 too. I looked at the calendar and it was the fourth Saturday of the month.

Here are the songs below the 100 for 2/20/82.

Bubbling Under The Hot 100

#101 E.L.O. "Rain is Falling (peaked at this position)
#102 Lakeside "I Want To Hold Your Hand" (peaked at this position, #5 R&B)
#103 Novo Combo "Tattoo" (peaked at this position, #42 Rock)
#104 The Whispers "In the Raw" (peaked at #103, #8 R&B, #8 Dance)
#105 Triumph "Say Goodbye" (peaked at #102, #50 Rock, #36 CAN)
#106 Bettye Lavette "Right In The Middle" (peaked at #103, #35 R&B)
#107 Slave "Wait for Me" (peaked at #103, #20 R&B, #21 Dance)
#108 Manhattan Transfer "Spies In The Night" (peaked at #103)
#109 Rosanne Cash "Blue Moon with Heartache" (peaked at #104, #1 Country, #37 A/C, #2 CAN Country)
#110 Chas Jankel "Glad to Know You" (peaked at #102, #57 R&B, #1 Dance)

This is the first time I've seen a Bubbling Under where none of the songs broke the 100! The bottom 60 for this week was pretty weak so I guess that helps to explain it. I listed more chart positions for other charts to see how the singles fared otherwise. I wonder when we'll see this again.

Other Comments:
  • #102 - The Lakeside track is a Beatles remake. I'm not sure who thought that was a good idea. This is the same group that sang "Fantastic Voyage" and made the cheesy Indiana Jones rip-off video.
  • #110 - From Wikipedia: "Glad to Know You reached number one on the US, Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, remaining there for seven weeks, and becoming the biggest dance single of 1982."

This was around the time Stars On 45 was big, so I assumed maybe they thought they'd ride that gravy train by recording a dance version of "I Wanna Hold Your Hand". But then I went & listened to it, & they turned the song into a slow jam. So much for that theory.

Bubbling Under The Hot 100

#101 E.L.O. "Rain is Falling (peaked at this position)
I loved the album "TIme" by ELO. But listening to it, the only song I saw with single potential was "Hold On Tight". I didn't think they actually released any other singles from the album. Looks like they did and I was right.

I did a little research on the single releases. It's interesting "Twilight" peaked at #38. It peaked for two weeks and both weeks were played on the countdown too: Nov 29, 2015 and Dec 4, 2016.

Singles from Time:
  • "Hold On Tight" - Released: 17 July 1981 (peaked at #10)
  • "Twilight" - Released: 10 October 1981 (peaked at #38, #30 UK)
  • "Ticket to the Moon / Here Is the News" Released: 11 December 1981 (#24 UK, not released as a single in the U.S.)
  • "Rain Is Falling" Released: January 1982 (peak at #101)
  • "The Way Life's Meant to Be" - Released: March 1982 (#85 UK, not released as a single in the U.S.)
Videos were made for "Twilight", "Ticket to the Moon", "Here Is the News", and "Hold On Tight". The video for "Rain is Falling" on the Bubbling Under playlist is a fan video.

I created a mini playlist of the videos:

I was surprised the song reached #5 on the R&B chart. I didn't remember this one and I'm not upset about that.

I guess they have to release singles to try to sell the album. To me the album flows as one. It was one of the few I bought on cassette. So it forced me to listen to it in sequence. Glad I did. It has been one of my favourites since it came out in 1981. But none of those songs stand up as a single without listening to the one before and after (IMHO). Ironically, the szecond best single I would have picked if I had to is not one they chose to release -- "Yours Truly, 2095".

I didn't know it until ..... right now! She's down with OPP!! (Yeah you know she!!)

Interesting
the biggest dance single of 1982
And yet nobody knows the song!

I caught pieces of the VJ a second time in the car and was reminded that MG said "Don't call Skyy a one-hit wonder. They had two hits, maybe three".

Skyy
#26 "Call Me"
#47 "Real Love"
#102 "High"

So, he's got his own definition of one-hit wonder....

She certainly is...:)
Interesting
This has piqued my interest. I feel like it will be a while before we see this again.
And yet nobody knows the song!
I heard this one before, but I'm not sure where. It looks like it never made it's way out of the clubs and on to radio. I guess they tried to get him more exposure. I found a clip from American Bandstand.

I agree. I would maybe call them a no hit wonder because I don't think the song is played frequently.

BTW - the ELO chatter above got me to thinking why I never dug into them past the Greatest Hits CD I own. So I went shopping & ended up ordering 6 of their albums ( this is how these things work with me a lotta the time ).

The only albums I have of them in their entirety is Discovery and Time. Both excellent albums for different reasons.
